Re: Replacing Vista with Linux OS on Toshiba A00

Is this your laptop? If so, Mint Xfce should run fine on it. Check the system requirements. Intel Celeron M 430 (1.73 GHz) 512 MB Memory 80 GB HDD ATI Radeon Xpress 200M IGP 1280 x 800 Windows Vista Home Basic Remember, that's a 32-bit processor so make sure to download the 32-bit version of Mint X...

Re: Greatest Rock and Roll band EVER!

Yeah, you have to add the "/John" since he was a strong influence on the other members... Hmmm. Strange. I read a book by the original manager of The Beatles, Allan Williams, named The Man Who Gave The Beatles Away. I can't remember which former member of the band said it, I believe it was one of t...

Re: Cairo dock show delay

Right click the dock and choose Cairo Dock > Configure. Click the Advanced Mode button in the lower left. In the Behaviour group, click Visibility. You should be able to tweak those options to suit you. :) I use Cairo Dock to make my Dell laptop look a little like a Mac. It's functional and I like t...

Re: merge /home

What if instead of sharing /home with the mix of hidden files instead he made a /data to hold the files intended for sharing? Any pitfalls doing that? In this instance, technically no. The /home folders should be holding your user configuration so a separate /data partition should work. I've never ...

What you would need to do is to install Mint, run the

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
terminal command, collect the output and then post it back here. This way, we will know what's the problem with your system and Mint. We will be happy to help you but you must help us, help you.

Re: If you have free access to turn an image PDF into OCRed PDF...

Just download the file. There should be a download button in the upper right while viewing the file in Google. Then it doesn't matter what I do.

Let me know if the file is searchable.

Re: Should I spend $250 for a 1TB SSD for my 2010 laptop? Or buy a $250 2017 laptop?

Yeah, I saw that too. Well, 4GiB of RAM isn't that bad. It does say that a RAM upgrade is possible but you have solder that too. Just remember, if there is a future problem with the RAM, you're pretty much stuck. It's an average system. There are some pretty good refurbished laptops on Amazon for $2...

Okay, I spoke too soon in my reply to your message! I didn't know your current laptop was broken. In that case, the new laptop seems to be the better buy here. Just make sure the drives and RAM can be upgraded and I think you'll be okay.

Re: What is the height of my Toshiba Satellite C655-S5193's optical bay?

Yes, 12.7mm sounds okay. Most optical drives are usually 12.7mm or 9.5mm. So you'll need a 12.7mm SSD SATA caddy. I think you'll be good with the SATA III drive because it is backwards compatible with a SATA I and SATA II interfaces. Here are some SATA differences . According to some specs I found o...

Re: Ralink RT2790 Wireless Card not working

Installing the firmware didn't work. I'm just going to buy a new wireless card because I have a 5Ghz network and this card can only connect to a 2.4Ghz network. I was hoping it would connect but it's not a big deal that it doesn't.

Thanks for your help, JeremyB.

Re: What is the height of my Toshiba Satellite C655-S5193's optical bay?

Probably the easiest way is to take the optical drive out of the bay and measure it. Then you can shop around for an SSD caddy like this.. The link is to an HD caddy but they have them for SSDs as well.

Thanks, MintyO. I was just going with what the OP said in his first post about Windows 10. That's why I asked about UEFI. Since it wasn't UEFI, it's good to hear he got Kubuntu installed successfully.

Re: Need help partitioning a drive

From what I can see of the existing partitions, your system is using UEFI boot, right? /dev/sda1 ntfs System /dev/sda2 ntfs HP /dev/sda3 Extended /dev/sda4 ntfs Factory /dev/sda5 Ext 4 /dev/sda6 Linux Swap You DO NOT want to remove any of the UEFI partitions. If you do, you'll have to reinstall Wind...
