Re: Good CD ripping program?

I'd really love to archive my CDs on my HDD, and kind of miss Winamp now You and me both, brother. If there is one thing great about Windows, it's Winamp and Minilyrics. I know there is a Winamp for Android, which is Linux. I can't believe it would be much more difficult to go the rest of the way a...

Re: Tea - questing for a good cup

I have never been able to acquire a taste for tea. Tried to once but it is no substitute for a good cup of coffee. (It's not much of a substitute for a questionable cup of coffee either.) I've tried the herbal teas, the flavored teas, the breakfast teas, the Irish teas, the bagged tea, the loose tea...

Re: Swap Partition

I think you're fine. With 8GiB of RAM you won't need much swap space.

Re: Swap Partition

From everything I have read about creating a swap partition in Linux, it all depends on your amount of RAM and whether or not you plan on using hibernation. I have Mint Cinnamon on my laptop that has 4GiB of RAM. Since I hibernate it occasionally, I have a 9GiB swap partition. This will cover any sw...

Re: Hostage Escaping Windows...

Like nhra1ss , I too have Mint on my laptop and Windows (albeit 10) on my desktop. I really can't give up Windows because I need it for things like TurboTax. I also have a 500GiB hard drive with Mint Mate on it for my desktop. I switch them out occasionally and configure Mate bit by bit. (The deskto...

Re: Weather applet doesn't work anymore

I use an app called my-weather-indicator. You can download it from here:

https://launchpad.net/my-weather-indicator

Use Yahoo as the weather service. Open Weather Map is not very accurate.

Re: Never had this simple problem before in about 10 Mint installs

The problem may be that Windows 10 is still in quick restart mode. It's kind of like hibernation; it allows Windows to start faster. 1. Start Windows and enter Control Panel 2. Click Power Options. 3. Click Choose what the power buttons do. 4. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable . 5...

Re: Reading Mac hfs/hfs+ hard disks

Remember that "reading" a drive generally means you boot to and log on to that drive. Just attaching the drive to another system is no guarantee of access. The same would apply to a drive with Linux installed and an encrypted Home folder. The entire point of security/encryption is stop people from d...

Re: Cannot change wallpaper anymore

I'm not sure this is the answer (and I don't have XFCE installed) but usually when the wallpaper files are greyed out, that means your background is configured to be a slideshow rather than a single wallpaper image. That is, you have to choose a folder , not a specific file. I'm not even sure that b...

Re: Cinnamon Login Screen Backgrounds

I did something very similar to what Karl suggests. I found the login screen theme I liked and made a copy of the folder. Then I added my own photo and edited the XML file to reflect the name of my photo. Then I copied the folder back to the MDM themes folder and voila! instant new login screen them...

Re: Desktop Background, I have to change aspect every time I log on

One of the issues is that the resolution of 1280x1024 is a 5:4 aspect ratio and the resolution of 1920x1080 is a 16:9 aspect ratio. There is a way to get different wallpapers on different monitors but you must be using Mint KDE. See this thread: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=2064...

Re: Video playback stutters / is jumpy

I have a similar problem with any system. I have tried to play an MPEG file created with tivodecode and the playback video is fine but the audio is quite choppy. However, this doesn't happen when I play it on a Mint 17.3 KDE, only on Mint 17.3 Cinnamon, MATE, and XFCE. This sounds like a codec probl...
