Re: Docky and Cinnamon Problem

Yes, you can anchor it to the left but there is no option to expand it across the entire screen regardless of where it is anchored. There are so many themes you'll have to choose the one that looks and acts like Unity. Mostly, it's a Mac-like dock. On every theme I've tried the icons always get larg...

Re: Docky and Cinnamon Problem

I just installed Docky to go through this but I don't use it. I use Cairo-Dock (Lots of nice themes and such). I did use Docky at one time and you pretty much have two choices. Either uncheck the Panel Mode box in Docky settings or autohide your panel. Neither will be want you want. I also just inst...

Re: 32 bit vs 64 bit

64 bit.

More and more software is being written to take advantage of 64 bit architecture. Eventually, 32 bit will be the outsider, looking in. With 64 bit, you can still run 32 bit software but the reverse is not true. Start off right and install the 64 bit OS if your CPU is 64 bit.

Re: Boot mode

Mint can handle either UEFI or BIOS. But if Mint is going to be your only operating system, BIOS mode is easier. And yes, you do have to enter the BIOS and disable Secure Boot. A recommendation: when you install Mint, choose the Something Else option and partition your hard drive to include /boot , ...

Can you upgrade your kids?
Yes. They're called grandchildren.

Do you know why grandparents and grandchildren get along so well? They have a common enemy.

It seems to me, from the little I've seen of it, that Australian Rules Football is like a cross of American Football and Soccer. From what I've seen of Australian Rules Football I would have to say it's more like Rugby and American Football. And I REALLY like Footy. And Rugby. Soccer, with a possib...

Re: Linux Shortcomings.

I re-imaged my Acer with WIn7 the other day and nothing (HD resolution, Wifi, Lan, Bluetooth) worked out of the box. +1 I rebuilt my Dell Zino with Windows 7 a few months ago and neither the wireless nor the Ethernet controllers worked out of the box. And neither did the video controller. I had to ...

To me this proved without a shadow of a doubt that consumers are the ones in charge. That is always true in free market economies. The consumers vote with their wallets. You don't get enough votes, you're gone. You adjust, you innovate, you change, and if the consumers don't like your product anywa...

I always root for whatever team is playing against the Patriots. With a proven track record of cheating, the Patriots are lucky to even be allowed to be in the league. Oh, wait! The league DID know about the cheating, destroyed the evidence, and took no action. Hmmmm! I hope the Falcons crush the c...

I will second the motion by Pierre of a new hard drive. They are staying up nights making inexpensive hard drives so it's worth your while. Since I don't know what hardware you have, here are two hard drives on Amazon. Both are 1TB. Desktop Drive Laptop Drive With 1TB of space you can dual boot if y...

Re: upgrading from 32bit to 64bit

Yes, that is the correct process. My recommendation is to partition your drive with a separate /home partition. This way, you can upgrade the operating system on the root (/) and /boot partitions by formatting them at build time but as long as you don't format the /home partition, all of your data w...

Re: Switched to XFCE =D

Every minimal, bare bones system I have tried Xfce on has worked without a flaw. I do not have a smattering of usability tests and such, with a specific regimen of a full test workout for the computer. I just start it up and use it. I use Cinnamon on this Dell laptop and enjoy it a lot. Cinnamon bei...

Re: Your Opinion on 17.3

I was troubleshooting an HP Envy laptop (built in 2013) with a bad hard drive. I had to completely repartition the drive because Windows was unusable (not through any of the typical reasons Windows is unusable). I installed Mint 18.1 Cinnamon but had a video problem. The mouse pointer would ghost wh...

Re: Power outages! How do you deal with them?

The worst power outage I've been through was 9 years ago. The power was out for 15 hours. The rain was light but the wind was very strong. I was working from home two days a week and this was one of those days! I needed to call my office for a conference call but I had no power for my home phone; on...

Re: Bluetooth problems: Bastien's computer? Who the heck is Bastien?

It's a bug. It's claimed to be fixed. Though I think it would be a rather simple thing to search the code for "Bastien's" and put something more descriptive, and certainly less cryptic, in its place.

Re: Trying to boot Mint 18 from USB to install

First, verify the downloaded ISO hash. It never hurts to be sure. Second. In Windows, I use UNetbootin to create LiveUSB drives from ISO files. I trust it and have never had a problem with it. If you have an available Linux computer, most have a USB Image Writer. Start there and see if any of this h...

Re: Best Mint version for really old laptop?

Not that this is an old laptop, but I was just working on an HP dv6 7215 NR laptop for a friend. Windows 8 went south ( , no really) but she has her data backed up. The hard drive had 904 bad sectors so I guess we really can't blame Windows. So I booted to a LiveUSB Mint 18.1 and used Gparted...

Re: Nvidia graphics 304.131 driver + cinnamon = panel unresponsive to mouse

Installing the 304.132 driver results in the message Cinnamon has crashed and is running in Fallback Mode. Very strangely the Cinnamon menu has been replaced with the MATE menu. I'm a little late to the conversation but I was working on a friends HP laptop with dual video chips -- Intel and nVidia....
