Re: My Latest Rescue

Just wondering, what command did you use to display that information (I'm still rather new here)? Go into the terminal and type in inxi -Fxz press enter then copy and paste to your message then use the code button to fit it into the box. Highly recommend these. https://linuxjourney.com/ https://sit...

Re: My Latest Rescue

Paid $5.00 for this one without a hard drive but I had a dead laptop so that hard drive went right in this desktop. Why buy new when prizes as this can be found for a few dollars and a few hours of time invested. :D Dell-Optiplex-360 ~ $ inxi -Fxz System: Host: Dell-Optiplex-360 Kernel: 4.4.0-59-gen...

Re: New people need to stop using 18.X and use 17.3.

I've had problems with LM 17.x and LM 18.x but nothing that wasn't able to be solved and both work well on my computers with Intel hardware.

Re: linux mint alternative?

Hey ogamoz, I use MX-16 and it works well for my minimal computer needs right out of the box although as with any Linux Distro it has its own unique quirks. There is a little bit of a learning curve however the MX forum is excellent if needed and there is also an excellent user manual available. Her...

Re: Forum security

Hey Moem and xenopeek,

Thanks for the info, uBlock Origin is a very good add blocker.
Amazed at the number of hits it shows being blocked on the different sites that I go to.

Thanks.

I don't get those. Have you tried pop-up disabling and/or an adblocker?
Nope.
Where do I go to disable pop-ups.
Mozilla is my browser with duckduckgo as my search engine.
What are some good choices.

Re: Forum security

Spam is just part of being on the internet just as ad popups from your different internet searches. I have several different email addresses one for important things and one for forums and one for social things. I receive spam on two of them and none as of present date on the one for important thing...

Re: Why should I switch to Linux?

The fears: No Fears. :) Learning Linux can be an enjoyable adventure. I have never used anything but Windows and I am short on time - how long does Linux take to learn/get familiar with? [I'm pretty good with MS Office - how long will it take me to learn something new?] The best way to learn Linux ...

Re: So called lightweight Linux distros...

Take a look at Peppermint OS: https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/peppermint I tried Peppermint 7 and it is A-OK / very colorful / full of features although I didn't find it to be very light weight on my old computer seemed to be very processor intensive. Re: significant difference with mint and ubuntu?

Tech support of Ubuntu is just miles better ... of almost everyone's really. I'm going to get flamed for this, but I actually recommend Ubuntu to Linux novices because of the tech support. You'll probably need it. I have to say that I get excellent support from both Ubuntu Forum and Linux Mint Foru...

Re: significant difference with mint and ubuntu?

Ubuntu or Linux Mint or Debian which one :?:  Try all three of them and make a decision based from your own experience and then install which will work best for what you are going to use your computer for. I use all three of them and like all of them no complaints. Whichever works best for the...

Re: Finally jumped completely off the Windows ship

Linux and its distros could become more popular the day they will propose a "plug & play OS", so to speak, because when you come from M$, people are used to that easy system. This is exactly why I no longer suggest Linux to Whining Complaining Windows users as they all seem to Whine about the fact ...

Re: Any Concern about Firejail?

Are you referring to this? This is a maintenance and security release for version 0.9.44. We strongly encourage you to update the software. If so, no, it's not really a concern for me. The way I understand it, some bugs were found which lowered the overall effectiveness of firejail, but didn't incr...
