Re: So called lightweight Linux distros...

Debian-Based antiX MX-16 "Metamorphosis" final just released.

I just installed and updated and all is running very well right out of the box. :)
It is a very colorful Xfce distro and comes loaded with all sorts of usable software.

It is definitely worth a look at IMO.

Re: On vs, off - Power

I think someone made the analogy about cars in a different thread. For most, you put gas in from the outside and drive it from the inside. Not me. I need to know how things work. I want to learn. I have found there are three types of computer people. 1) The Macintosh user - turn on the computer, an...

Re: On vs, off - Power

How many systems have you fixed due to user error and then had to fix them again months later? Yeah. Me, too. Quite a few and especially during the upgrade from MS W7 / MS W8 to MS W10 who didn't want the upgrade but failed to change the update settings to "download updates but let me choose to ins...

Re: On vs, off - Power

Apart from poor quality components, could it also possibly have something to do with the variability of domestic electricity supply? Here in Australia we are in thunderstorm season and lightning can create sudden and severe power surges. It is my practice to disconnect electronic components from po...

Re: On vs, off - Power

After a lifetime of switching power to computers on when needed and switching off when not in use, I have never experienced any component failures. May I ask you did you ever seen failed PC and did you knew when those failure came in sight? 95% of failures can be described by same scenario: "Sir, y...

Re: On vs, off - Power

The only malfunctions that I have encountered were wore out hard drives and CD/DVD drives, fan motors I'm still using desktops from 2005 and have encountered the same wore out hard drives and CD/DVD drives, fan motors. It has been my thinking that constant on and off would be harder on the componen...

Re: On vs, off - Power

I think it all depends on the quality of components used and environment it is used in. Heat has and always will lead to failure of components quicker than being in a cooler more controlled environment. I would be more concerned with utility power surges and power outages which can and will destroy ...

Re: So called lightweight Linux distros...

If you like lubuntu you may also want to try LXLE (nice) ;) I'll have to download the ISO and give it a test drive as it does look pretty good. Let us know what you think Old Timer. I'm not impressed. I have had two bad iso downloads from their website which redirects you to SourceForge. I'm not wa...

Re: So called lightweight Linux distros...

Yes, this is a good useful distro, but there is a learning curve for Icewm (not even mentioning Fluxbox). The "lower" DE that I can accept is Lxde. Antix as with any Debian Distro there is a small learning curve however once past that curve the Distro is a good little one that does everything the b...
