Since Mozilla uses Google wouldn't that mean a user would have to stop using Mozilla?
Most if not all Mozilla browsers use Google or am I wrong.

Re: So called lightweight Linux distros...

I use Antix Linux on a lot of my computers and have no complaints if only all Linux Distros ran as well right out of the box. :D

Linux Mint 18 Mate is my choice of the big mainstream Linux Distros it has proven to run well on my computers right out of the box. :D

Re: Security

Finally, on my own, I found a site named, "https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/security", which looks like it might be what I need. Do you have any experience with this site? Is it any good? Can you recommend any others? Basically I just want to keep my Linux clean and working quickl...

Re: Advantages (32bit vs 64bit) Linux Mint 18

Hey Jedinovice, If I was a person who has to be mobile all of the time I believe that my choice would be a tablet over a laptop. Tablets are more suited for being mobile than laptops and just all around better as they can do most everything that is needed in the field. Battery times are way longer /...

Re: Advantages (32bit vs 64bit) Linux Mint 18

Modern AAA Games, tho, need serious hardware. So much so that I would saying that buying a 'gaming laptop' is probably not worth it. It has to be a powerful desktop. I never have seen a laptop yet that was able to compete or keep up with raw horsepower available with a desktop as there just isn't s...

Re: Advantages (32bit vs 64bit) Linux Mint 18

For the majority of users, though, their "typical use"-- word processing, light spreadsheet use, web browsing with fewer than 5 open tabs, looking at PDFs, that sort of thing-- probably wouldn't tax memory too horribly. This includes my home use over 95% of the time. So I see the point you're makin...

Re: Advantages (32bit vs 64bit) Linux Mint 18

Ok my question the most ram I use is when I'm streaming videos in HD and I never reach anywhere near 1.0 GB ever. So that being the case why would anyone need more than 4.0 GB ram. What would an end user be running that would ever need more than 4.0 GB ram when running any Linux Distro. Even when I ...

Re: Advantages (32bit vs 64bit) Linux Mint 18

Most Linux distros will run on a lot of older hardware. I'm running LM 18 Cinnamon 32 bit on a dell desktop from 2005 running a Intel Pentium 4 Processor 630 (2M Cache, 3.00 GHz, 800 MHz FSB) with only 3.0 GB DDR2 ram without any problems at all. Old computers and old hardware still rocks and there ...

Re: Advantages (32bit vs 64bit) Linux Mint 18

It's also important to note that while PAE allows you to access over 4 gb of ram, your processes cannot. That is, when you have an 8gb PC, with 32 bit PAE, you can access all 8gb, but your MySQL server can only access 4gb. -H I don't believe that any desktop computer I run Linux on has more than 4....

Re: Advantages (32bit vs 64bit) Linux Mint 18

Someone explain this I installed LM 18 Mate 64 bit and also installed Ubuntu Mate 16.04 64 bit on this same desktop and both of them work flawlessly.
I have never had any good luck with any Linux distro using Xfce 32 bit or 64 bit.
I'll stick with one of these two that work.

Re: Advantages (32bit vs 64bit) Linux Mint 18

(Edited quote) trouble with 64 bit operation / because parts of the chipset are 32 bit. Your processor might be 64 bit but bits of your motherboard may not be hence problems. This desktop originally came with Vista 32bit and a Amd Sempron single core processor so what you are saying may very well b...

Hey Jedinovice,

My computer needs are very minimal basic web surfing and youtube streaming so I haven't noticed any speed increase.
I don't know if this particular desktop likes 64 bit, some things I'm finding aren't working right. :(

Re: Advantages (32bit vs 64bit) Linux Mint 18

You did not say, what you are using at now. If you have Mint 18 32 bit and not interested on a particular program like Chrome, there is no need to install the system new just for going to 64 bit. If you have something else and want to install new with Mint 18, you should consider the 64 bit version...

I'm going to give LM 18 xfce 64bit a try as I've read good things about it.

Will let you know how it goes.

Will this particular system with only 3.0GB ram and integrated graphics be enough to run LM 18 Mate 64bit?

Advantages (32bit vs 64bit) Linux Mint 18

Hello,

I'm running an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ / 3.0GB DDR2 ram / NVIDIA C61 [GeForce 6150SE nForce 430] integrated graphics adapter.
What advantage will LM 18 64bit offer over LM 18 32bit other than being able to use more ram which in this case isn't going to matter.

Thanks

The Old Timer
