Re: Should I upgrade the kernel??

Look into the features of the kernel. I switched to 4.2.0-35-lowlatency because I do a lot of audio and photo editing. In my case it makes a determinable difference. From what I read, even more so if you're using a recording program (like in a studio) or heavy video editing. If you're just using you...

Re: Progress of copy or downloads when minimized

What browser are you using? I believe there is one available for Firefox as an add-on, and I think Chrome does it by default. I am confused about the quote. Uget is a program, not an add-on. It is browser-independent, but for Firefox you need the extension FlashGot for integration. I use FF BTW. So...

Re: Why is there so much hostility towards newbies?

Cosmo - I too read through all 3 of the OP's threads and found no hostility. I also noted that the last thread was a year ago... I assume that the OP is talking about his experience on other "Linux" forums and has come here for some sympathy or in an effort to try to understand the whole phenomenon...

Re: Why is there so much hostility towards newbies?

BTW, places like...er, is it Just Ask? are FULL of people who will tell you if you're too stupid to run Linux, go back to Windows. There are a lot of helpful people, but there are also a LOT of trolls waiting to snare a n00b...

Re: Why is there so much hostility towards newbies?

I am - hm, let's say astonished about the starting post. Looking into the history of the user's post, not really difficult with just 7 posts (this thread inclusive), shows, that he wrote questions in exactly 3 threads. The majority are from 2014, the last one is precisely 1 year old. Not only, that...

A seasoned veteran of so many OS choices? I doubt it.
That's a good reason to yell at them.

Re: Why is there so much hostility towards newbies?

I started out on the Apple ][+. Over the years I have used every Windows from 3.1 to 10. I do not consider myself an "idiot". Over the past few years I have been experimenting with Linux. I now do most of my computing in Mint 17.2. I dual boot with Windows, Windows can do things I cannot with Linux...

Re: Desktop settings need to be reloaded each boot

As I already wrote, this is hard to analyze. But as the new account is working, it is the quickest solution, to copy(!) - not move - all your data from the old account to the new account and continue to work with the new account. Important: As the new account will be your main account, make sure, t...

Re: Desktop settings need to be reloaded each boot

This confirms, that Moem is on the right track. Near to impossible to analyze. The problem is likely caused by the user account. Create a new one and test the behavior there. Hmmm...no "Like" button here.... New user was unaffected, always loaded correctly every time. I moved all my hidden files to...

Re: Desktop settings need to be reloaded each boot

I got a hint today: It appears to be window manager related. The theme I have requires Metacity, which Marco appears to be . wmctrl -m Name: Metacity (Marco) Class: N/A PID: N/A Window manager's "showing the desktop" mode: N/A If I go to Desktop Management/Windows and click "Marco with Compositing" ...

Re: Desktop settings need to be reloaded each boot

Well, I had LXDE installed as well, and when I removed that it started behaving, with Cinnamon still installed. I also removed anything related to Gnome that was not required for Mate. I had another Mint installation running on another machine and did not have this issue, and that also has Cinnamon...

Re: Desktop settings need to be reloaded each boot

I also like having lots of desktops to choose from, so I have Mate, Cinnamon and Openbox installed Might that be the cause of the problem? Not all desktop environments play well together and it's not really recommended to combine them in Mint. Well, I had LXDE installed as well, and when I removed ...

Desktop settings need to be reloaded each boot

Hello folks: I am not a newbie to Linux, nor really a newbie to Mint (tried Mint a long time ago...V4?) But I am having a bit of an issue. A preliminary: about my user name. I have been using Arch for about 5 years or so. I love the ability to customize just about everything in Arch. However, I am a...
