Re: When did you come to Linux?

I am contemplating an Arch partition in future. I would probably never switch over to something like that full time - it would more be just a project to learn from. The awesomeness of Linux as a desktop operating system is a hugely well kept secret You just said a dirty word! I love Arch. Yo...

Re: Linux Mint will not start

Did you do any updates from the time you installed the OS? Do you recall what they were? Did you update the kernel or graphics driver? Do you have more than one desktop installed? When the computer boots, and gets to the end of the BIOS loading, hold down the left shift key until the GRUB menu comes...

Re: I don't find any broken pakage, but software manager tell me the opposite..

What will do the command apt policy nvidia-384 ? It seems to me there was some kind of an issue with the 384 driver, can't remember. I stayed on 304 for a LONG time, then went to 37X, and waited until 390 came out. I have an older card, and it has a couple glitches, but nothing like I heard describ...

Re: Dodged a bullet!

Oh! Coffee does nothing for me. I often have a brew before bed. My quack forbids me to have any coffee other than decaf. I have to take adrenalin every day, which gives me an enormous boost. Add a weak coffee to that and I'm in hospital. The last time it happened was hilarious. I told the ER doctor...

Re: When did you come to Linux?

I wonder how many here have set up Gentoo from scratch... I'm tempted, being  a glutton for punishment  a keen experimenter. It can't be that much "harder" than Arch, can it ..? I have been on Mint far too long now. Not having to tweak something every other day has made me fat and lazy. G...

Re: When did you come to Linux?

I was adequately proficient in DOS, and pretty good in Windows 95-7 (even hacking registry). Windows 10 is beyond my minor skills. I just wish I had more time to learn linux deeply. I was a batch file wizard. Built menus and automation for menial tasks in minutes. I can't seem to translate that suc...

Re: Current 4.18 kernels

Indeed. I'm running version 4.18, but only because I wanted to install nVidia's version of H.265, and it required that kernel. You might benefit from this if your card is a 1060 or better and your CPU is hyperthreading with at least 4 cores: sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-lowlatency-hw...

It's because there is so much help available on-line for thinkpads, e.g. thinkwiki. Suspect if it was another brand I wouldn't have attempted it. Think you have an X230, so also a member of the thinkpad fan club :D I repaired Dells for years. I had old Thinkpads, the ones where you opened the "hood...

Re: Current 4.18 kernels

Hey all, I don't quite understand what's going on here. I know there's preparation for 4.20, I guess it is, to eventually come out, but why is 4.18 only supported until August? Is it the case that there will be a stable version for this released down the road? And is it advisable to use or not use ...

Re: I don't find any broken pakage, but software manager tell me the opposite..

Thank you. I tried that. It did not work. I still have the exact same problem, as I described. Did you add a repository from somewhere else, or did you try to force something? When I tired to install version 6 of some C++ library, I got the same thing. I was trying to force install some application...

I love 17.3. IMHO it is one of the best Operating Systems ever. And I've played with PLENTY. I use it for my "snapshots"; USB stick versions I make for different people for different purposes. One has a mobile recording studio, his wife is a photographer, another guy is a DJ, and another a videograp...
