Re: Who no longer trusts or uses Facebook?

I left Facebook in 2009 and never looked back. However in 2012 or 13 I made a fake one (lol) because I played some app that gave me in-game points for linking my fake, sandboxed Facebook account. Then I used my fake account to get a real apartment in New York. Now I live in NYC. So...thanks, Faceboo...

Re: Welcome Ladies - post here :)

Hey y'all! So glad to know that there's a forum for Linux Mint and specifically this lil area for ladies. I made a mistake nearly a year ago by purchasing a small, non-Net/Chromebook laptop. I naively believed I could have the minimal amount of programs I wanted - just MS Office and a VPN and a vir...

Re: Windows based apps: Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop?

I never had any luck running PS under Wine, but it did run perfectly fine in VirtualBox running Windows.

That eventually stopped working without explanation, so now I dualboot if I ever want Photoshop (and Eve Online)

How do I prevent my Microsoft LifeCam webcam from continuously autofocusing?

The camera repeatedly, continuously autofocuses. Like it's never good enough! I just need it to autofocus once, and turn the feature off thereafter. I only use the webcam on Skype with my friend, who says the camera's built-in microphone pics up a frog-like sound every time the camera tries to refoc...

That fixed it. Thanks, lmuserx4849. Also, the issue is probably related to what you are talking about, bjmh46.

Firefox seems to be quietly "evolving."

Copying Firefox key3.db file and logins.json no longer imports my passwords [SOLVED]

Has anyone else encountered this before? Previously, anytime I reinstalled Firefox, I would drop my key3.db and logins.json files into the mozilla profile directory to port all my passwords over. This method no longer works, regardless of whether I'm moving the files from an existing installation to...

Whenever I ask a question like this, people answer me like, "why do you want a panel? Many linux users do not use a panel"

Congratulations, Tom. Installing Mint alongside Win7 next will be so much easier than if you had attempted to install Windows second. Windows copywriters are probably forbidden from acknowledging the existence of any other OS, forget working "alongside" one

Re: How to ensure Mint is secure from Spectre & Meltdown?

Dude, excellent responses. Thank you guys so much. I have just two more questions. The microcode itself is not open source & will most likely never be. It doesn't even come with a proper changelog: no one knows exactly what goes inside them. 1) Do you think the driver is mislabeled 'open-source'...

How to ensure Mint is secure from Spectre & Meltdown?

From my reading I understand Spectre & Meltdown require at least a two-fold response: Hardware (firmware update) and software (OS) While I wait for my motherboard manufacturer to release their update (skeleton.jpg), I know Windows automagically applied their mystical patches behind my back, and ...

Running PSX with Games application from Software Manager

I can't find the directory ~/.config/gnome-games/platforms/PLATFORM/system where I'm supposed to put the PlayStation BIOS (and where 'PLATFORM' is SegaGenesis or any system). It's referenced here in the documentation: https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Games/Documentation#Firmware_configuration Why can't I...

Re: built-in security and password strength

Cosmo points out real danger! This is especially true of anyone running bootleg Windows or pirated software. The likelihood of your computer being turned into a bot increases dramatically under those conditions, but even on Linux, under the right conditions, your computer can be absorbed into a hack...

Re: Start VPN in Linux Mint 18.3

It looks like you've already created a VPN connection, so that's good. You want it automatically logged in at the beginning of each session, right? Like as soon as you're online. VPN all day, every DAY, son! Do this: Click your network icon in the lower right panel. Click the network connection you ...

Re: How do I share a directory to linux and windows PCs on a local network in Mint 18.3 Sylvia Xfce?

Thank you. I followed that SMB checklist and got everything working. Everything, except the ability to view my Windows shares on either Linux computer. But this could be because I didn't actually share anything across the Homegroup. On the other hand, if I click my Windows 10 PC on the network view,...

18.3 Xfce (beta) desktop feat. deskbar

On this budget laptop, where I need every pixel of vertical screen real estate I can get, the Xfce vertical deskbar makes the most sense. It is thin, stays out of the way, and looks good, too. It's actually quite colorful, all things considered, but that's not bad. It can look a bit dated, though. S...

Re: How do I share a directory to linux and windows PCs on a local network in Mint 18.3 Sylvia Xfce?

Thank you, that worked to share linux to Windows. I can make these private, but how do I set username and passwords for the folders? Also how do I get thunar to open Windows shares? I can see it on the desktop, but I get an error: Failed to open "PC-NAME". Failed to retrieve share list fro...
