Re: Linux Mint 19 “Tara” Xfce – BETA Release

Strangely enough, the volume control icon got back to its normal size "all by itself". Go figure how. But what I am having "trouble" with now is the over-sized power-manager icon. I tried to adapt your solution, replacing pulseaudio-button with power-manager-button (icon/plugin)...

Re: Linux Mint 19 “Tara” Xfce – BETA Release

Finally, no screen tearing with Compositing turned on. No longer need to use Compton.

Also seems most of the bugs have been addressed with the latest updates.

Re: Linux Mint 19 “Tara” Xfce – BETA Release

those wifi-dongles are now being sold by the 1000s to "upgrade" older systems to connect to today's in-home/in-office wifi infrastructure. These dongles work PERFECTLY under win7/8/10! Why not under LM18.x, or LM19? At the very least: Mint's "Driver Manager" should sniff out tho...

Re: Linux Mint 19 codenamed “Tara”

Will the 4.4.x kernels be available via the update manager? There is a lot of hardware not fully supported under the later kernels and it would be nice if those that need 4.4.x could install it and keep it up to date via the update manager.

Re: update-grub changes --class to ubuntu

I know a quick work around is to replace the ubuntu.png with the linux-mint.png one (rename linux-mint.png, ubuntu.png). I don't have any ubuntu entries so I don't need an ubuntu icon but I want to lean the correct way to fix the issue if there is one.

update-grub changes --class to ubuntu

Is there any way to stop update-grub from changing --class from linux-mint to ubuntu? I use a grub theme and that --class change changes which icon is used for the Mint entry. I'm tired of manually editing /boot/grub/grub.cfg every time I update the kernel or do anything else that invokes an update-...

That's another problem I've had with Mint Xfce with LightDM, you could try replacing it with MDM:

sudo apt install mdm xscreensaver

sudo apt remove slick-greeter lightdm lightdm-settings apparmor

I just did a clean install of 18.3 and the problem still exists. Replacing LightDM with MDM fixes the problem as it did with 18.2.

I second the playonlinux recommendation, it allowed me to effortlessly install photoshop and lightroom which is a real chore without playonlinux.

Re: Update Manager !, not ✔

It would be nice to have the option which way it is handled, I typically postpone level 4 and kernel updates but update level 3, 2, and 1 immediately. With the ! all the time, I don't know when new level 3, 2, and 1 updates are available without opening the update manager.

Update Manager !, not ✔

Since updating to Mint Xfce 18.3, the update manager remains an ! instead of checkmark unless I update the kernel and other sensitive updates that I didn't have to update to get the checkmark in earlier versions of Mint.

Re: How to downgrade packages that are updated by adding PPA?

I will have to disagree with "Under no circumstances should you use ppa-purge in mint", I've successfully used it a whole lot of times. I think it depends on what packages got upgraded with the ppa you are trying to purge. For example, purging ppa:team-xbmc/ppa has no ill effect on Mint.

I'm finding that the best hardware support is with 4.4... kernels, I've had problems on all my former Chromebooks when upgrading to more recent kernels and even a Lenovo Thinkpad didn't like the more recent ones.

I fail to see how that has anything to do with this topic. How is that going to automatically power down the system when the battery is critical or power it down without prompting when you press the power, sleep, or hibernate button?
