Re: Boot up: "error communicating with TPM chip"

Some errors that appear on boot are harmless as long as your system boots and it does not take too long. You probably should not even see it but the boot process on Linux is tricky.

Re: Mint 20 & Firefox

I had used Software Manager to get it. And i just did a new install using Synaptic. It still says "ubuntu" and "canonical". Do i have a misconfiguration somewhere? If i do it's not something i tried to change. If you install it just again it will still use your previous configuration. You should op...

Re: Black screen ""Unable to launch “cinnamon-session-cinnamon” X session --- “cinnamon-session-cinnamon” "

It could be related to the upgrade to Mint 20.

First let us have a look at your sources list:

Code: Select all

cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list
Please post any terminal output in code brackets for better readability.

Re: Mint 20 & Firefox

I updated the system but I am still on the older version. The update did not offer a newer version of Firefox yet. It is probably because of another mirror.

Re: Terminator issue.

Go to the window manager setting of Cinnamon and Mate and try to adjust the position there. You have to change the positioning to something else then automatic, like center or manual.

Re: Are my 12GB of RAM not in use?

There was never a real need to remove RAM and you had plenty. I have 16 GB and never reach above 6 GB, at least with day-to-day tasks. Now with 8 you have of course less memory and will see a greater impact.

Your problem was never a problem in the first place. ;)

I have since found out that auto login will not work because Home Folder is encrypted.
That is the logic behind. Why encrypt and then have auto login? I guess you have to begin from scratch again and I have no idea if something like that could be reverted in-place.

Absolutely agree with above. I also use an Intel integrated, no issues. RAM is the most important factor and an SSD makes things really faster.

Re: Mint 20 & Firefox

Whereas in Mint 20, it is "78.0.2 Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu, canonical - 1.0". That is strange. It should show Mint as it also does here on my machine running Linux Mint 20. Are you using the version from the repositories? apt policy firefox will show us which version is actually installed on your...

What remains to be seen is what happens when either browser gets an update.
As far as I know that should not be a problem. It does usually not depend on the application's update.

Re: Problems upgrading from Mint 19 Cinnamon to Mint 20

If you have no PPAs listed, no problem. Better for the upgrade but maybe you can remember which programs you have installed from them and remove them, in other words using apt to remove them and later proceed with the upgrade to Linux Mint 20. The Mint x.3 version will be just the same with some com...

Re: Problems upgrading from Mint 19 Cinnamon to Mint 20

Sorry, in this case just deactivate them from the software management tool, it is easier. Because I use no scripts and that is the only step done in the GUI. Otherwise you could install ppa-purge or using the rm command that I do not recommend.

There is also LMDE 4 that supports 32 bit and I would probably use dd but that is not beginner friendly.

Re: Google-Chrome-stable wants to be default browser

If the GUI did not work in changing the default browser you can try it manually using:

Code: Select all

sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser
Although Thunderbird is its own beast but first try the alternatives system.

Re: Problems upgrading from Mint 19 Cinnamon to Mint 20

I would try again, of course after doing a round with Timeshift and a general backup. Afterwards update your system as usual or using the terminal. Try to do just the same but first remove the foreign packages from the PPAs by hand either using the software center or the command line, I would even d...
