Do they both use the same menue?
I do not think so. Ubuntu Mate uses probably Brisk Menu and Mint uses the Mint Menu. You could try it with Alacarte. That program lets you completely customize the menus. I am not sure if it works with Mint Menu but it works with the older default Mate menu.

Re: Avahi-daemon loop when upgrading

I would try a:

Code: Select all

apt install -f
That usually solves dependency issues.

Re: Ideas on Budget Laptops...

I only bought one laptop new. Since then I only shop for used stuff, mostly old Thinkpads and Dells. I do not need anything new or fancy just a good 'old' keyboard on them and durability. I also can and did upgrade parts, e.g. the RAM. My actual daily driver is a ten years, maybe even eleven old Del...

Your boot time is even faster than mine and I see no problem there. I am not sure if you have an SSD but that would boot faster than an ordinary HDD.
And I have the same 'black' screens when booting but there is a short time when I see the Mint logo before coming to the login screen.

Re: On Going Issue Mint 20 cinnamon new Install system non restart after suspend

They are indeed interesting as I have the same setting, so it looks normal. I would definitely only choose one power manager and in your case it should be from Cinnamon. Because if you use more than one it messes things up. Is mate-power-manager installed on your system? We can have a quick look: ap...

I don't think downgrading to a kernel that predates the release of this CPU is a good idea.
Not sure what you mean but LMDE comes with 4.19 by default. It is not downgrading, it is choosing it from the Grub menu. ;)
But it seems it not kernel related so we have to try something else.

Re: Doubled printing

I only know I had the same problem with my old HP printer and blamed the printer for it and I was right as I had to replace it with a new one.
I do not think that is an issue with LibreOffice.

Re: Cinnamon crash / mintupdate segfaulting

You use the kernel from backports. Did it work without issues on the default 4.19 kernel?
You could switch back to an older kernel and see what happens.

Re: Long black screen after GRUB and after login

Maybe that is just the boot sequence and it needs its time. Was that an in-place upgrade to Mint 20 from Mint 19?

Post the output of:

Code: Select all

systemd-analyze
and

Code: Select all

system-analyze blame
so we can take a look what takes so long to boot.

Re: LMDE or Mint Cinnamon?

If you are asking I would suggest Mint based on Ubuntu especially with your Nvidia card. To make the explanation very short. Ubuntu based is what most users prefer and the flagship whereas the Debian version (perfectly usable) is more an alternative and probably but not exclusively geared towards mo...

You said you are using Cinnamon but you used the Mate power manager to change settings?

Can you post:

Code: Select all

xset q
from the command line. Maybe it will give us a hint.

Sometimes there are errors on boot that are actually harmless and you should not even see them but the boot sequence is still not perfect.
I would observe what happens here but if everything is working as expected...

There won't be one. Calligra has been dead for at least 8 years. It's probably only in the repos because it compiled.
Does not seem dead to me.

It is also the version in Debian Unstable.

You are right. Problems always can happen I guess I am always lucky but I have experience with Debian. Maybe that also plays a role here.
Though I have to say that Mint has good tools indeed to make the migration as painless as possible.

I really like the 13.3/14" size laptops. To me they offer the best compromise of portability, battery life, ergonomics, and comfort. So my vote is:

13.3"/14" as the right size.
Same here and my actual laptop has 13.3. I like even smaller because of improved portability.

Re: What are the benefits of doing a fresh-install of Mint 20 VS upgrading from 19.3?

I have been using Mint as my main OS since 2015. In that time, I have a lot of stuff installed , and I am dependent on those apps. Formatting the hard drive, installing the OS, and reinstalling plus configuring all the applications would be a 3 to 4 day project. I don't have time for that. I'd only...

Then in 2023 I think I will move to Debian, do love Mint but these issues are a pain which can be avoided to run Debian Mate.
Where you will have the same problem because Debian dropped Python2.

Found it!
Auto-start disabled in Preferences, found in Icon drop-down menu.
Many thanks.
Thought that and that was the reason why it reappeared in autostart. Because it was not disabled from preferences.
