Desktop icons stacking in corner after boot

Mint 18.3 Cinnamon Starting a couple of days ago, the desktop icons all congregate on top of the Home icon, in a jumble. (I imagine there's an update behind this.) I then have to reposition them. It always happens now except if the desktop is set to Auto-arrange, but that doesn't place them the way ...

Re: [Solved] root login and password

Found it by googling it again, and THIS time it came up with the page on the forums I was looking for. But I searched for the same terms on several engines and on the second try at Google it came up on page 3. Jeez, search engines have become difficult. https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=2...

[Solved] root login and password

I should know this, but I don't :(
How do I login to a virtual terminal? I don't know the "root" password as I've never set one that I know of.
This was explained somewhere else here, I think, but I can't find it now

Soundconverter FAIL - it's not seeing the files I want to convert

Have this old iPod touch and I've tried using "Soundconverter" on .mp3 files so that accursed iTunes will accept them - it refuses to see 10% of them. Couldn't find a Windows program to do it on the VM either. Baffled as to why the conversion programs can't find these files, but they play just fine....

Re: Reading Recommendation

I believe you're talking developments of a more recent nature; they will be chewed over for a long time before there's any consensus.
There may be flaws in this book, actually I know there are, however, that does not take away from the whole here.
A fascinating and thought-provoking book.

Reading Recommendation

Before the Dawn Recovering the Lost History of Our Ancestors by Nicholas Wade An absolutely fascinating look at the development of human societies during the species' expansion out of Africa and across the globe. Where the author's info may be disputed, this is acknowledged. An honest book of great ...

Re: Girls with Guitars

Exactly!!
Why are these excellent musicians so unknown?
Is it more "Harvey Weinstein-itis?" Of course it is.

But anyway, isn't that voice awesome/

Girls with Guitars

Anybody else found this outrageously good music? "Blues Caravan" Dani Wilde, Samantha Fish, Cassie Taylor, Victoria Smith, Eliana Cargnelutti, Sadie Johnson, Heather Crosse, Deborah Coleman, Candye Kane: that's 9 women - who are as good as any guy, and some of these girls are better than any guy. My...

Luck.
You might have something there. If anybody is looking for the "bad luck kid", well, I'm right here.
Good luck for me was the creation and success of Amazon.

Re: Linux for Clay Tablets

OK, my vote is in. After borrowing a dozen or so Linux books from the library, and checking out their layout, this is the one that most suits me and my look-up habits:

Has Quality Control Left Town?

I love Amazon. And their (its?) A to Z guarantee. So I can return or replace things without being hassled by officious, bureaucratic fools who think they're important. Just got some new headphones, they don't work. Neither did the last set I ordered, from a different manufacturer. With Amazon, I jus...

Configuring qBittorrent for auto-shutdown

In qBittorrent's Options > Advanced , there's a line to choose the Network Interface . This gives me these choices: Any interface, eno1, vibr0, vibr0-nic, vboxnet0 How do I tell which one the VPN uses, (presumably eno1 or vibr0 ??) so I can see if qBittorrent actually stops when the VPN turns off?

Re: ATTN!...Intel CPU owners (Spectre & Meltdown flaws)

The Register seems to in the last few years come close to what I would find to be an IT equivalent of https://www.usmagazine.com/; not close to something you should refer to often. Yea, I know, I just happened on it and followed the link to see if it was real. Sounds to me that Intel says that "the...

Re: ATTN!...Intel CPU owners (Spectre & Meltdown flaws)

Perhaps someone could translate this? There's a link to a Linus Torvalds rant, and a link that's included in that article.

Re: This forum is FRIENDLY....

I have finally and successfully got Virtualbox set up and it's crackin' !! These are the toys I'm playing with so far; going to look for "Hackintosh" soon. :D :D And it was only with the nice, polite, well-mannered, "Mrs. June Cleaver loves you all" help that I got here. (That's The Beaver's Mom for...

[Solved] Need new case - how to find correct one for motherboard?

Just before this "Meltdown" stuff I ordered a new MB.
I was going to make the switch and found that the old case, being proprietary, doesn't fit.
My question:
How do I make sure a case has a removable backplate? Looking on-line at cases I haven't found a way that I (personally) can tell.
