strange installation error with tesseract

Tried to get tesseract ocr from the package manager and got this error as it tried to install: W: Can't drop privileges for downloading as file '/root/.synaptic/tmp//tmp_sh' couldn't be accessed by user '_apt'. - pkgAcquire::Run (13: Permission denied) I'm running as superuser (the manager asked for...

linux TCP vulnerability?

Ran into this story -
http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/ ... 080916.php

Should we by default do the recommended?

1. Open /etc/sysctl.conf, append a command "/net.ipv4/tcp_challenge_ack_limit = 999999999".

2. Use "sysctl -p" to update the configuration.

Re: seeing windows machines on windows workgroup from linux?

...Did you follow the HowTo or not? I have it bookmarked and am trying to understand what it says - If you have further issues post the output of the following command: testparm -s OK - but for completeness sake, here is what is says now, before I work through the problems checklist (which will tak...

Re: seeing windows machines on windows workgroup from linux?

Thank you for the reply - interesting - I am running the Mint 18 Mate desktop and "Network servers" is a folder that is by default on my desktop. In it I see my machine name and a folder called "windows network". Note that all workgroup and machine names were created on the windows side, including t...

seeing windows machines on windows workgroup from linux?

I have a router with machines hooked to it both wired and wifi, and they are running windows (or are game consoles or android devices). I thought I understood that installing "samba" would show me the machines when I hit "Network servers" on my desktop. That obviously isn't true :( Scanning the post...

<solved> Re: FSTAB for dummies?

Delightful - did exactly as you said, and lo, and behold! the drive appears on my desktop. And it will survive powerdown and automount upon reboot?

Re: FSTAB for dummies?

Don't know which desktop he's using, but on Cinnamon just open the file manager, select "File System", right click on "etc" and select "Open as Root", then double click on "fstab" to open it in gedit. Edit the file, close gedit and close the file manager. Done. I'm in Mate, I just downloaded gedit ...

[solved] FSTAB for dummies?

I want to have a couple of NTFS hard drives automount on login and/or boot, but am terrified of "editing" system files like fstab (which is what I gather has to be done to do this). Is there a point and grunt interface to fstab somewhere? - Elmar

replacements for Gravity NNTP reader and Omea RSS client?

I have been looking across the various linux recommendation sites and am completely baffled by what I find - lots of talk of "builds", etc. In Win7 I have as my nntp news reader Gravity (http://mpgravity.sourceforge.net/) and for the RSS reader I have Omea Plus (http://www.jetbrains.com/omea/). Both...

Re: Firefox URLs from windows not working in FF on MINT?

You need to create a shell script that extracts the url from the .URL files and passes then to your browser, see this: http://askubuntu.com/questions/353932/equivalent-of-url-file-on-ubuntu when the script is working you must right click a .URL file and select "Open with" and choose the script af s...

Re: Firefox URLs from windows not working in FF on MINT?

If these URL's are like file:/// and point to your windows C: drive or anything like that, you should change the first part to whatever that drive is called in Mint. If the windows drive is visible at all, depending on the file system of the windows drive. Can you see the windows drive in Mint at a...

Firefox URLs from windows not working in FF on MINT?

I have a dual boot system with Firefox existing both in windows 7 and in mint 18. I have folders on win7 drives that I can see from Mint, and some of them have URLs (file type .URL) that I have "pulled" from the Firefox address bar into these folders. They work fine as drag/drop in FF on win7, but f...

[SOLVED] Re: starting from win7

Found the problem with the password - CAPS LOCK <snort> AOK now, a functioning installation, with internet connection. Will start a new thread if I can't find out why it won't see my dual monitors, or how to change the default OS in grub. thanks all.

Re: starting from win7

Well, unhooking the other drives resulted in windows having a cow, and requiring some "repair" until it would consent to simply boot from the main drive alone :) That done, I installed mint OK, and all went well, including making a username of ets and a password of dad, until I tried to log into min...

starting from win7

Mint newbie here - win7disks1.jpg As you can see my disk 0 has a clear space of 123 GB in the middle where I shrunk the win7 boot partition to make room for the mint installation, as seen from win7's computer management console. There is also 117 GB space on "disk 1" but I want that to remain unused...
