Re: Can't browse windows network or mount shares #2

Got a weird set of responses in terminal when I closed smb.conf - ** (xed:11227): WARNING **: Set document metadata failed: Setting attribute metadata::xed-spell-language not supported ** (xed:11227): WARNING **: Set document metadata failed: Setting attribute metadata::xed-encoding not supported **...

Re: Can't browse windows network or mount shares #2

First 2 steps worked as expected: pings went through with no loss, and caja smb://192.168.1.100 showed me the contents of the windows machine. Next: Load smb config files from /etc/samba/smb.conf rlimit_max: increasing rlimit_max (1024) to minimum Windows limit (16384) WARNING: The "syslog" option i...

Re: Can't browse windows network or mount shares #2

Thank you for your patience, Altair. I'll get to this today or tomorrow, and follow your instructions (which I will copy to a text file for future reference - this time. I was an idiot for not doing it before, but I didn't expect to have to reinstall from scratch).

Re: Can't browse windows network or mount shares #2

This is the 3rd time - maybe 4 that you've asked the same question. And this time it won't work! Why??????? I am getting more than frustrated. It worked on a 32 bit system running 18.1, and fails on the 64 bit system running 18.2 in the bloody same network. That is why I ask , and have to ask again...

Re: Can't browse windows network or mount shares #2

Thank you for the kind reply, but I fear that the tutorial itself is hopeless as a stable solution - it actually tells you " On your Windows system go Start>Network Places>View Network Connections. Locate the workgroup icon, right click it, and choose status>support. From the support dialog, write d...

Can't browse windows network or mount shares #2

Why oh why is this so difficult? I am having the same problems. I cannot see the windows 7 machines attached to the same router from my LINUX MATE box, and I've gone through the samba checklist with no effect. My network is all DHCP, so talking about using static IP addresses is useless, since they ...

SOLVED Re: returning to mint 18.2: windows URL files

<fixed the version number: sorrry> I don't remember doing anything like installing thunar, etc. But, I just remembered that my old laptop running 18.1 could do this. checking it says that .url files open with rundll32. Clicking them opens them immediately in the browser. And I found the answer here ...

[solved] returning to mint 18.2: windows URL files

Got 18.2 beta MATE 64 bit running :) I remember a year ago I found something that would open drag/drop windows URL files directly into the browser. But for the life of me I cannot find what it was. It wasn't a bash script or anything like that, but simply an installed <something> that opened the URL...

[solved] Re: Intel h170 chipset not recognized during installation attempt?

Well, resurrecting and old thread - I tried the 18.2 beta mate release, and VOILA! it installed straight off with no problems. It is running on the SSD, but I note the following: 1) it is slow as molasses compared to win7 2) it does not see my second monitor at all So - the OP "problem" can be marke...

Same problem with the ASRock H170M Pro4 motherboard and an nVidia GTX1060 GPU. Nothing works, including adding nomodereset verbiage.

Re: Intel h170 chipset not recognized during installation attempt?

Hey elmarts. I have been away for a while, but if it is worth your time there is a Fedora derivative called Chapeau http://www.chapeaulinux.org that may fit your tastes. Actually I found a Fedora 25 MATE (Fedora-MATE_Compiz-Live-x86_64-25-1.3.iso) since I do really like the MATE desktop. Will gird ...

Re: Intel h170 chipset not recognized during installation attempt?

Just tried LMDE - and it was a failure. It didn't give me any errors, just said loading please wait, and then sat there. No further DVD activity, no screen activity, nothing. Gave me a scare when windows thereafter would not boot. But at least that OS came back. :)

Re: Intel h170 chipset not recognized during installation attempt?

I believe you have the Kaby Lake in the 7th generation CPU. I have an i6700K which is Skylake and it is fine with Mint 17 & 18 both on my Asus Sabertooth Z170 S. At least I thought you mentioned that you had an i7700U somewhere. The box says Core i7 unlocked, i7-6700K LGA1151; CPU-Z version 1.78.1 ...

Both mobo and BIOS work perfectly with win7 64 bit (which is what I am using to post here) - what info can I give you to help diagnose?

Re: accessing other users files on HDD from Live CD

As you can tell, I'm a newbie with this, and the command line for me is something I have not really looked at since the days of CPM (yes I'm that old... :) ) I would like to save my installed programs and my home folder so that I can reinstall from the CD and not have to reinstall all the programs a...

So if I want to stay with Mint (which I really like btw), I will need to wait for version 19, which should have an updated kernal?

mint 18 fails on graphics check?

My nicely working mint 18 Mate just died. Attempting to boot it results in "Welcome to emergency mode". Reading through the suggested "journal" several line highlight red - line 1076: Failed to query NVIDIA device; line 1085 - Timed out waiting for device dev_disk_by \x2d, and line 1094: name server...
