[SOLVED] Transfer Linux from one HDD to another?

I installed Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon onto a 128 GB HDD and have been using it for some time. I now want to transfer it onto a 1 TB SSD. My desktop machine has removable drive bays, and I'm no stranger to booting different Linux distros and even different OSes to experiment with them. Though Mint 19 Ci...

Re: I have the cake, now I want the icing... Almost off the Microsoft plantation!

I tried using Sync on my old machine and then running Sync on my new machine. It brought over my preferences and add-ons, but it didn't bring over any of my tabs (I had a LOT of tabs open). After tearing my hair out, I finally just copied each tab URL to a text file on a thumbdrive and then copied a...

Re: Can I trust this PPA? (Truecrypt installation)

I second the above post. I installed Veracrypt on my machine. I downloaded a blah-blah-blah-veracrypt-blah-blah.tar.gz file. I un-tarred it and got four blah-blah-blah-veracrypt-blah-blah.sh files. I chose one and ran the command sudo bash blah-blah-blah-veracrypt-blah-blah.sh and it installed witho...

Re: [SOLVED] Installing Mint on an ancient pre-historic laptop???

Actually, I do plan to use it to connect to the internet when traveling to czech my email and do some light web surfing. Then consider your email as already compromised, because it soon may be. In my eyes, you've made the wrong choice here. I like Mint too, but I like secure email more. And Cinnamo...

Re: [SOLVED] Installing Mint on an ancient pre-historic laptop???

Actually, I do plan to use it to connect to the internet when traveling to czech my email and do some light web surfing. I know I can't use it for video streaming or gaming, but I'll suffice. And I won't lose too much sleep if it gets lost or stolen. This very laptop sells on eBay for between $20 an...

Re: Installing Mint on an ancient pre-historic laptop???

Well, after waging war with GParted for the past hour or so convincing it to make the HDD bootable by setting the boot flag on and setting the mount point to "/", I got it to install Mint 3.0 with Cinnamon. I really wanted MATE, but Cinnamon was the only option with 3.0, and Cinnamon is a nice GUI a...

Re: Installing Mint on an ancient pre-historic laptop???

I would try MxLinux, Mint is not specifially developed for or suited to older hardware. But the Gnu/Linux universe is a lot bigger than just Mint. Thanks for the suggestion, but I like Mint :-) Most of those hp machines shipped with a 1.5GHz Celeron CPU and 512MB RAM. Do you know the specs of the o...

[SOLVED] Installing Mint on an ancient pre-historic laptop???

I have installed Mint 19 64-bit Cinnamon on almost all my home PCs. Yay! But I have a HP ze4900 laptop with Windoze XP. I tried installing Linux 19 32-bit because it has an i686 core. But even that was too ancient for mint to install. Mint 18 32-bit wouldn't install. Nor would Mint 17 32-bit. My nex...

Re: Can someone recommend an AntiVirus program?

Okay. I don't need an A/V. Just turn on the firewall. And run Steam and Firefox in FireJail. And use HTTPS Everywhere, NoScript, AdBlocker Ultimate (or equivalent), and WebOfTrust.

[SOLVED] How do I install a 2nd hard drive?

I got as far as using GParted to format the drive, and then using Disks to mount the disk and set the mount point. But when I tried gksudo nemo to set the permissions, I got this error message: Failed to execute child process "gksudo" (No such file or directory) . I'm running Mint/Cinnamon and confi...

Re: Can someone recommend an AntiVirus program?

Thanks, but I think I'm gonna choose Way #3 : swap hard drives. My machine is a server grade machine with removable drive bays. I use SSDs for my boot drives, so I don't have a lot of space to install multiple OSs on one boot drive (Linux may be lean, but Windoze is a space hog -- I put apps and doc...

Have you considered using a dual-boot system? Sounds like that would be the best for you.
Good idea! I've never considered that. But I think setting up dual-boot is way beyond my Linux skill level at the moment :-(

Re: Can someone recommend an AntiVirus program?

Though most viruses in the wild will not attack Linux , you can still pass them on to your windows buddies. Really? How is that at all possible? Say I have a Windows virus that I'm immune to and it can't harm me, but I'm infected with it anyway. And say I'm playing Fortnite (sandboxed with either F...

Well, I'm a gamer! I need Wine and PlayOnLinux and JDK! So does that mean I do need an A/V after all? I'm sooooo confused :-/

Re: Can someone recommend an AntiVirus program?

Thanks for the replies! I enabled the firewall immediately after installing Mint, and uninstalled Flash. But I'm a gamer, so I do have Wine and PlayOnLinux and Steam. I also write Bukkit plugins for my Minecraft server, so I also need the Java JDK. Oh, and I also have AdBlock Ultimate, and HTTPS Eve...

[SOLVED] Can someone recommend an AntiVirus program?

I'm a Linux Mint n00b who just recently switched to Mint from Windoze. I actually like Win 7, but it's becoming harder and harder to avoid upgrading to Win 10, which I can't stand. So I recently upgraded to Mint 19, instead. I love it as it looks and works almost like Win 7 with a few cosmetic graph...

Re: Mint 18 hangs after "dots" screen. Mint 17 says, "Graphic drivers not found, using software rendering."

I spent the past few hours trying different Linux distros. This post may be a bit long winded, but maybe it'll shed some light on my problem for you Linux gurus out there. As I said, I downloaded all the ISOs on a Win 7 machine, and tried to install them on the target machine described in my first p...

Thanks. I tried that several times. This time: - Pressed down arrow and chose Compatibility Mode - Lots and lots of diagnostic messages - Linux Mint 18 Sarah mint tty1 Mint login: - More diagnostic messages - Spinny icon on a black screen for about a minute - Mouse pointer on a black screen for abou...
