I missed, that the nautilus itself is managing the icons. So if it is crashed, then the icons are gone. My crashes have do to with mounted nfs shares. Please tell which associated wlan driver you are using.
I am using the ipw3945 which tends to crash sometimes. This might be the reason why the network manager can not help.

a liitle more detail: It seems it has something to do with the nautilus file manager. If I click on a resource that is not present anymore like a nfs share whose parent was shut down, then immediately after this the icons disappears. I've found the reason why the uwsusp does not function anymore. There was no swap available! I tried to renew the swapspace and edit the /etc/fstab to reflect to the new UUID but swap could not be activated.
