Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

I understand why Linux Mint is dropping KDE and concentrating on development of their own Cinnamon desktop. I have enjoyed using the KDE version since it was first introduced in Mint. My choice of "new distro" is going to be Neon for the simple fact that is it as close to Mint KDE as I have tested o...

Re: Panels must not overlap.

KDE Plasma and Gnome are vastly different as to how you can create/configure panels. The KDE wiki offers more info on configuring Plasma than Mint specific can because of the number of different DE Mint supports.

Re: Linux Mint KDE has also a crippled file saving/choosing manager?

If you right click on the file name/path (located below the toolbar and above the window) in Dolphin there is an option to show full path ie home/owner/folder/file or in root /folder/subfolder/file. When comparing any desktop environment to Windows there is a learning curve as to where and how it ca...

FrankenMint KDE is still fast and stable. Updates have caused no problems at all.

Re: Unfunctional Update Manager Tray Icon

Right click of the Update Manager system tray icon has been the default behavior in Mint KDE 18 since the desktop was updated to Plasma 5. It seems everyone adapted to it and is why there are no complaints.

Re: Why does Mint KDE ask for a login 2 or 3 times during install?

When doing an installation of Mint KDE always go into system settings and disable lock screen or adjust the time before starting the install. I think that by default it is set for 5 minutes and if no activity is detected (mouse movement or keystroke)during install it will activate lock screen.

If I am understanding you correctly this has been covered at the KDE forums. It is somewhat involved but might be what you are looking for.

Re: VLC 3.0 - Stable

VLC 3.0 is also available as flatpak. Easier than using snap and is in the Mint Software Manager. The bottom right tab/button labeled "Flatpak".
(Spotify and Pithos also are more up to date as flatpak than are found in the "official repository".)

Re: Preparing for Mint to drop the KDE distro

Despite what is posted at KDE neon site (not being a "distro") it is becoming THE KDE/Plasma os that I will be using after LM KDE is gone. From what I understand it was indeed just a "project" until the KDE devs saw how popular it has become. KDE has partners that have released a KDE Slimbook and I ...

Re: Replacement KDE distros... Feedback here!

It would seem that KDE is going to continue the Neon "project" since the announcement of the KDE Slimbook recently. This would indicate that there will be a continuing of support and updates using LTS base of Ubuntu as it has been so far. https://dot.kde.org/2017/01/26/kde-and-slimbook-release-lapto...

Re: VLC 3.0 Released

This is the version that I have been waiting for! I installed using snap package availible in Ubuntu's snap repository. So far no bugs have been seen in my limited testing. The inclusion for streaming to Chromecast runs well (with the native "recognized" formats for Chromecast) but transcoding of ot...

Re: KDE5 is still disaster

Let me start by saying that after hours of working within virtual machines and being very careful I used the instructions here as a basis for adding neon repos and installing neon-desktop. DO NOT TRY this if Mint is your only installed OS. After much trial and error I now use it as my only OS on thi...

How did you do that? Is there a link to instructions?

Edit: Did you simply do sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop?

No I find the Kubuntu desktop method only installs the latest LTS (5,8,8).

Re: KDE5 is still disaster

If my memory serves me correctly KDE4 was also called a "disaster" when it was released. Over the development cycles it improved to be the DE that long time users love so much. I now use LM KDE 18.3 but with Plasma 5.11.5 (latest frameworks and QT installed) and can honestly say that I am quite plea...
