Re: VirtualBox

To share folders with Virtualbox it has to be started with root privileges. That is not correct. Shared folders work fine without root privilege. That is the case because VirtualBox shares folders via a network connection. Thanks for the correction it is actually VMware where you have to sudo to ch...

Re: VirtualBox

To share folders with Virtualbox it has to be started with root privileges. You can run Virtualbox as root by opening terminal and use su or sudo virtualbox command to open it as root. Once opened you can then share folders and make settings to network if necessary. Once the folders are shared or ne...

Re: Brave Browser & Firefox 57

Firefox updates in Mint repository usually are posted within a week of the release. Here is the Firefox release schedule: https://wiki.mozilla.org/RapidRelease/Calendar As far as using Tor's privacy according to the Brave website it seems to still be in the development stage. Re: Netflix the easiest way I've found with FireFox

Netflix doesn't care which platform you use. Your internet connection determines the quality of video available. The higher quality video needs a faster connection. Video in 4K format is available IF you have sufficent bandwidth.

Re: KDE Games, where is it?

KDE Games as in the KDE 4 version has been obsoleted and no longer available in Plasma 5. There are a limited amount available in Synaptic. As you can see at the following link the KDE Games News section hasn't had an entry since 2008.

Re: Whats the details on KDE Neon?

I have KDE Neon User Edition installed on a test laptop. It is a very minimal Ubuntu based distro that has just a base amount of software installed. It has the latest KDE Plasma DE 5.10.3 and uses the Ubuntu 4.8 HWE kernel. I wouldn't recommend it for new users but for those that like a "semi-rollin...

Have you tried disabling hardware acceleration in chrome? I know this fixes KWin crashes with some systems.

Re: Linux Mint 18.2 “Sonya” KDE released!

So if you say that KDE5.8 is stable and reliable, I very much doubt that. Mind you, I'm not ranting. I wasn't stating my opinion concerning Plasma5 but rather was giving info as to the packages Mint devs included in the release. I have a "for testing" laptop with KDE Neon installed running Plasma 5...

Re: Linux Mint 18.2 “Sonya” KDE released!

When KDE confirms a LTS version of 5.9/5.10 then it should be included in Mint. I agree that some of the features are nice but Mint uses the Kubuntu backports and for Xenial 16.04 the choice has been the LTS 5.8 version. Stable and reliable are the goals of Mint devs not cutting edge.

Re: Installing Windows on VM

I prefer VMWare Workstation and Player as they offer greater virtual system customization. If you have a 64-bit processor but virtualization isn't available (older processors) with VirtualBox you can't create a 64-bit virtual machine but you can with VMWare. The only downside is VMWare is paid softw...

Re: Linux Mint KDE vs. KDE Neon

I have a laptop that I use for "long term testing" of KDE distros with KDE Neon User Edition installed. I have been using it since Plasma 5.9 and just did the usual updates/upgrades and now it is using Plasma 5.10.3. While there has been an occasional "bug" the devs at KDE are quick to patch. The "f...

Re: No 64 bits option for Windows in Virtual Box

I tried Virtualbox on a laptop with Intel DuoCore that allowed 64-bit install of either Win or Linux as host or main OS but since virtualization wasn't supported by the processor (not even in bios) I could NOT create 64-bit vm only 32-bit. I then installed VMWare Workstation and tried again. With VM...

If you read the release notes in full there are details on how to sudo as root. "The root account is now locked by default. You can use sudo with your own password to become root with "sudo -i"." I am sure this will become an easy adaptation to do things as root. :D

Re: Linux Mint KDE vs. KDE Neon

KDE neon offers the latest Plasma releases in the User Edition (5.10.1). It is a very basic OS with very few packages installed. Kde neon User Edition LTS comes with the latest Plasma LTS version (5.8.7). Linux Mint KDE is an OS that is "more complete" and stable since it includes tools and packages...

Re: Testing Mint 18.2 Cinnamon Beta (I think)

Just checked the Mint mirrors and the betas for 18.2 MATE and Cinnamon were posted there under the "testing" on 02/06/2017. Everyone that has used any software should know what "testing" and "beta" mean. Caveat emptor is the "disclaimer" with any "beta" releases.

I have found a 3rd party ppa for installing VLC 2.2.6 but think I will wait for it to be included in VLC's official builds. The article is here but I am unsure of how trustworthy the ppa is. http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/201 ... ugs-fixed/

I installed the Kubuntu backports and plasma staging ppas in Mint 18 when Clem added them as a topic here to help the Kubuntu team with testing for the Plasma 5 release included in Mint 18.1. The Plasma 5.8 series is very stable compared to the prior releases and now my Plasma version is 5.8.7 (base...
