Re: Harddrive or controller?

Yeah, it might have been the SATA cables. Because the system's working without any issues for days now. The funny part, I didn't change anything yet, when I was checking the memory and everything I replugged the sata channel several times, which didn't help back then, but seems to help now. I kinda ...

Re: Harddrive or controller?

Okay, I ran memtest for a whole night (10 hours straight), the whole test program passed 5 times, no errors. I agree, that faulty RAM would have been a likely cause, but assuming that memtest should have discovered something and that there are sata errors I'll try replacing the disk now. If the prob...

Re: Harddrive or controller?

Yes, I suspected the RAM as well and already tested the memory with memtest86,
which reported no errors. Also, today after the system froze I was thrown to the text
console, where there were continuos SATA errors, very much like those shown with
dmesg.

Harddrive or controller?

Hi, my linux mint system was running perfectly until this weekend. Now, the system randomly freezes and dmesg reports sata bus errors. Is there any way to tell if this is caused by the harddrive or if maybe the controller bus itself is faulty? Gnome-disks still reports "Disk is OK, one failing attri...

Re: [SOLVED]Screen tearing

Same here. Nvidia GTX 1060, driver version 367.57 on Mint 17.3 with XFCE (openbox + Compton). Before adding that line to Xorg.conf, screen tearing depended pretty much on which applications I used, e.g. chromium works better for websites with videos than firefox, smplayer (through vdpau) always work...

Re: Problem with 367.57 nvidia driver [solved]

I didn't get to checking it out right away, but now I can confirm reconfiguring mdm doesn't change anything on the nvidia drivers or the error message. I still think, the problem is with a part of the nvidia package (the persistence service) using systemd, while mint does not. I'm not sure if the pe...

Re: Problem with 367.57 nvidia driver [solved]

Are you also on LM 17.3 with Cinnamon? Have you tried sudo dpkg-reconfigure mdm yet? Yes and no, I'm on LM 17.3 with XFCE. I'm having no issues with mdm or the driver itself working, it's just this error message during bootup. You could look through the service startup folders for references to /bi...

Re: Problem with 367.57 nvidia driver [solved]

Hmm okay, I have the same issue, while the driver itself works fine, I still wonder if the error message can turned off? Obviously, the driver wants to run some persistence-service that's no longer included in the 367.57 driver? systemd-udevd[859]: failed to execute '/bin/systemctl' '/bin/systemctl ...

Re: Video card recommendations?

However, what about those people saying you shouldn't combine an AMD CPU with an Nvidia graphics card? That's nonsense. It might explain some of these tearing issues though, in case the two just don't work together. Again, I suspect, it's mostly because of XFCE, but I even have some tearing w...

Re: Video card recommendations?

Much better support with excellent non-free drivers, for a much longer support period than AMD. Okay, good point. The fact that my rather old Nvidia GTS 450 is still supported probably counts in favor of Nvidia. However, what about those people saying you shouldn't combine an AMD CPU with an Nvidia...

Re: Video card recommendations?

Thanks for the quick answer, I think one of the reasons, why you never experienced these problems is because you're using Cinnamon, while I'm using XFCE. XFCE's known for it's tearing issues, just do a web search for "screen tearing" and "xfce". It's still my preferred desktop though. Also, the nouv...

Video card recommendations?

Hi, I was wondering, if someone here on these forums would be able to help me pick a new video card, that they experienced to work well along with Linux Mint and XFCE? While I'm fairly new to Mint, I've been using linux for more than 20 years now and I've always had issues with screen tearing under ...
