Re: Help with Screen Freezes

This is odd. Seems a standard 1TB msdos MBR type hard drive, but has too many partitions, and none of those in an "extended" area as required in msdos standard MBR manner, indicating itself is or was at some point a GPT drive. Anyway, you can't go past 4 standard partitions in MBR unless the 4th is...

Ah! Good to hear! :D

Just for info, compatibility mode is booting with these temporary kernel parameters: xforcevesa nomodeset b43.blacklist=yes noapic noacpi nosplash irqpoll

Re: Panel Disappears after installation reboot

If you use the super key (some call it "Windows" key) do you see the menu at all? I'm wondering if the screen resolution is bad to where the perimeters are off the screen. Do you see any icons at upper left? Boot up with the nomodeset kernel parameter temporarily and see if that changes it. There a ...

Doesn't GRUB only list a finite number of kernels?

Re: GRUB bootloader now appears when I power on

The problem with a 0.1 second Grub screen is that sometimes you actually need it, e.g., to access advanced options and boot an earlier kernel. Makes more sense, IMHO, to use something like three seconds. Short enough not to annoy overmuch, but long enough to be useful. Good point for that. And with...

Re: GRUB bootloader now appears when I power on

My head is spinning (confuses because I'm a total newb on how this stuff works) In that case I advise to reconsider my previous recommendation: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=301110#p1681413 Not the clean solution that pbear and zcot are trying to find for you, but it's a quick-a...

Re: Login loop

Ah! Okay, great!

You are fine then.

You can easily delete some files from ~/Downloads

and Empty the Trash.

Further than that you could get technical and do some things as in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=266175

Re: Why is this partition automounted ?

Timeshift on first startup Oh! I missed that in your post, I thought you were saying if your ran timeshift on live session then started the installer it would keep the mount for the installation. Either way, that's not a good method. I've been thinking it defaults to the / of the system par...

Re: Why is this partition automounted ?

Weird.

And probably no need to run gparted as root too.

sda1 looks like it would be a fat32 esp partition, but I think it's not. I wonder how that works? Is that encrypted so that it must get mounted automatically at the first to start /boot anyway, and so then it's mounted?

Not anything to do with the live USB Linux Mint. Both live and installed Mint have timeshift installed by default.

Re: GRUB bootloader now appears when I power on

You need to be able to analyze the data in some useful way to be able to do the right thing of course.

Or just post up the info with the command that pbear mentions and we'll see if someone can make heads or tails of it. ;)

Re: Login loop

I'm trying to figure out exactly what the problem is, because it appears that you just did updates and a kernel was one of the updates and then now you can not boot. This does tend to imply that the kernel update was a problem. And also seeing messages about no space left on /boot that does seem lik...

Maybe do an internet search such as youtube how to install linux mint. There's are 100's of friendly and e...

Re: How to install Linux mint to new ssd

You can take a look at the Official Installation Guide, that should give you a primer at the least: http://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ Maybe put some consideration into the partition scheme, since if you just use the simple install method of "use the whole disk" Mint will ...

Re: (SOLVED) A newbie black screen question!

I would take the normal updates first, remember, ignoring the errors that come up and just keep using apply updates(that's this 19.1 packing issue). Of course there's a kernel upgrade so i would deselect it for now. get it all up to date. make a timeshift snapshot. Then go toward the 19.2 update whi...

Re: Login loop

a pre-emptive concern I have: That's good to be concerned. Actually the stackexchange article is relevant, but not as much the askubuntu one. Let me explain. It's different than both of those articles. It looks like in both of those cases they deleted 1 or more kernel files that are marked as the c...

Re: (SOLVED)A newbie black screen question!

Oh no, no, no! You're right, that's way too much of a hassle. I'll just stick with your last suggestion, install 19.1 and either live with it or try upgrading to 19.2 later. Thanks much for your help! One good thing there, Schultz mentioned above, is if it's the kernel giving the problem, then an u...
