Re: GRUB bootloader now appears when I power on

... not a removable usb ... Gotcha, I interpreted the post incorrectly. Also true, though, that I didn't know update-grub captures UEFI entries even if the drive is no longer present. Well, it's questionable. I think you interpreted correctly for the most part. But probably "not a removable usb" wa...

Re: Login loop

Since /boot partition is full, you will not be able to use the system until you clear space in /boot. Delete all(4) of the 4.15.0-60 files: https://i.imgur.com/oWVYqJO.png Then you must boot the system into the 4.10 or 4.15.0-58 kernel. Do you know how to boot to a previous kernel? select Mint, pres...

Re: Grub2 help cant add additional menu entry

Thanks but I lack knowledge about grub2 and kernel parameters. How did you arrive at lost? To make the changes permanent the command has to be added in /etc/grub.d folder. I downloaded the iso and opened it with the file manager, and saw that the important files to use are not located in the /casper...

Re: Grub2 help cant add additional menu entry

linux (loop)/casper/vmlinuz boot=casper iso-scan/filename=$isofile noprompt noeject toram initrd (loop)/casper/initrd.lz You have to look at the internal structure of that iso and can look in /boot and then /grub and at the grub.cfg and general file structuring and you can probably end up with some...

Re: GRUB bootloader now appears when I power on

That's where the problem is. To grub it is in fact a dual boot system. The other drive, not a removable usb, "I did boot from another drive with Linux Mint installed (not the installation media but an actual drive)" you can use the sudo efibootmgr and remove the entry that was added from when you us...

Re: Login loop

Ok. That looks like a kernel bug. A lot of reports and workarounds.

But did you boot to the previous kernel instead? which version?

Are you able to see the /boot directory of the broken file system when using the live session installer media?

I don't see anything particularly off about home, and groups, except for ~/.themes which has reaching implications, but I'm guessing that was done manually. But sudo chown -R $USER:$USER ~/.themes fixes that. Great work on chasing the Plasma thing! Installing kdeconnect doesn't pull in a full deskto...

Re: A newbie black screen question!

Thanks for your input Zcot. I choose to stay with 32 bit because that was the Vista os it came with. And it has only 3gb of ram! From all I've read that might be acceptable but marginal for 64 bit. And honestly, I'm not looking to make it any faster, it's fast enough for what for what I do with it,...

different types of packages. gtk different versions, kde stuff, lot of qt etc. and i don't really know if that's a good or bad thing to mix those? The problem is i spend so much time constant fixing my linux that i spend to little to learn about that shit! :( Not that i don't like fixing it, no bet...

ppa Does the custom kernel manager have a clean removal function? And that works on 18.3? ;) I'm not sure what you are asking, what custom kernel manager? Also what PPA? Mine? Not compatible with 18.3. Ahh, noted. :( I thought I recalled you mentioning your custom update manager having a broken-ker...

Re: Login loop

so it seems like /boot partition might have run out of space, so the -60 kernel is not fully installed correctly. you can select 4.15.0-58-generic and boot that previous kernel, you don't need to edit anything. Then see in Update Manager, "View" menu -> Linux kernels. And if you have a lot of kernel...

Re: Nemo and its 1001 flaws! :( Bookmark icons change on click

I don't know. Something's up. I've never even heard of that. Any search result I find is related to kde and plasma. I have a sense that the system is quite a mix of packages and with conflict going on with it. And that may also have something to do with some of these 1000 issues. Any idea I ...

boot to previous kernel. pull up the grub menu and select e advanced to get the previous choice of kernel. after that you can uninstall this latest one. maybe you get in the login loop and hop to a tty with ctrl + alt + F1 and type dkms status and see if you have any custom drivers that are listed f...

Re: Can't Upgrade to Tara

If there's nothing manually held or blacklisted, then you could attempt apt install libgl1:i386 directly with terminal and see if it will give a more verbose error message. The upgrade check is interpreting problems but I think not passing along the exact full error messages. you can see what is pro...

Re: A newbie black screen question!

You can, and at least I would, use the 64 bit version. The chip does give the lm flag which means you can do 64 bit. I would do that and be using xfce and just keep my memory usage low enough to where I'm not getting into /swap usage which will bog the thing down, and it would do very nicely like th...

The default Mint installation has an empty sources.list so you can simply create an empty file there: sudo touch /etc/apt/sources.list

(It actually does include a source list from the installation "cdrom" but it is commented out by default, so effectively an empty file.)

I have been using and installing Mint on friends computers for several years, but just joined the forum for a bit over a year. I was just wondering if I'll always be a level 1. Be nice to be a 2 or 3 - like a little badge. No biggie though.

I'm not good with nfts mounts, but pretty sure those mount lines aren't sufficient. I've help search out some some solutions on IRC many times, but like I said I'm not using it so don't know the in's and out's really and finding the exact analytical details as if I used it for myself. Re: VLC Crashing

just for info, this terminal command will reset vlc if you can not open it in the GUI: vlc --reset-config vlc://quit

Then you can open it again with the GUI shortcut as default settings.

sometimes this flag might also be needed as well: --reset-plugins-cache
