Re: 30 years ago

Several people contributed to the end of the Cold War, Is it the end of it really? Sanctions against Russia at every turn, slander all over media, then this as the crucial point mean, it's not the end or never was : https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-49198565 Strangely enough, I don't have an...

Re: One site causing issues

Vivaldi has been steady as a rock so far. So I might be onto a winner here. It's now just a matter of updating all of my links and passwords. Is there a method whereby I can open a link in a new tab in the background without having to press any modifier keys. I know I can do it by <Ctrl><Click>on a...

Re: Why We Need a Universal, Open Standard for Editing Documents

Multiple Master failed since nobody cared ... ... With Adobe Reader, Adobe has retained the Multiple Master concept internally for quite some time, but differently under OSX and Windows: The font Myriad, for example, was well protected under OSX and not completely included in the CS programs for Ad...

Re: Could photoshop cs6 play on linux?

Speaking of Photoshop: It makes me wonder from which sources Windows users install Adobe CS programs, not only in Wine but also in Windows itself. A few months ago, a customer of mine wanted to continue working with Adobe CS 3 after a computer swap, but with the hard drive unchanged. This was not po...

Re: One site causing issues

Yeah, sometimes it works fine, other times it bogs me down. At one stage I can have several tabs open and no trouble, at others, only one and it falls over. I suspect it's one of their ads that is the culprit. Anyway I shall try another browser and see. The following add-ons were installed in Vival...

Re: Could photoshop cs6 play on linux?

Forget PhotoShop and learn Gimp. That's what I did and never want to go back. If you really must use PS (?), then run it in a VM running Windows. Wine is just a crutch that should be avoided anyway. I have a Win7 VM just for the handful of Windows only programs that I need, and PS is not one of the...

Re: Linux Mint on a MAC

This should be an iMac and therefore have a DVD drive.
On (older) Macs the USB thing is too stupid for me: I burn a Linux ISO onto a DVD, insert the thing into the drive and reboot with the C key pressed.
That's it and it's foolproof.

Re: Email Client

Ok, starting with rene. You make a valid point about Mint not shipping the latest version of Thunderbird, so, the question is, how do I install the latest version when Synaptic says I’ve got the latest version? My guess is it must be a Terminal instruction but what? As you can see I’m not up to spe...

Re: Email Client

If Thunderbird causes problems, Sylpheed or Claws Mail (a fork from Sylpheed) would be worth a try. In my case, gmail worked with Sylpheed right away.

Both are easy to find and install with the Synaptic Package Manager.

Re: Gnome patent troll

I'd sure like to know what the patent troll patented . Neither Clem's blog nor the underlying Gnome blog talks about any specifics. Mind you, I'm against any abusive patent, whether for software or anything else. I'm also against abusive copyright laws and take serious objection to Disney's — and o...

Re: Only in Texas....

Beat the system: buy a simple coffee grinder, buy a fresh bag of your favourite coffee beans, and brew your own by hand. The secret is to grind only the beans you need for one brew: that way, you always have freshly ground beans. Which is essential for the aroma. It's what I do; nothing beats my ow...

Re: I have a problem with my Hard Drive

To cut a long story short: BleachBit normally used, can - or can not lead to system errors.
BleachBit as a superuser can simply delete system components - just like sudo commands in the terminal.

Re: Are topics purged, if so how long do they stay up?

For things that I find useful, I simply copy the text and make a locally stored text file of it (of course, backing it up just like every other file I have). That way I never have to worry about it disappearing. I really don't think any copyright laws come into play, do they? I mean, if I write som...
