Oh agreed, I didn't mean to imply that you didn't know, sorry.

Re: Would Linux be more popular with LESS choice?

Why are you guys laughing at me? Because you keep on missing the point. What you are asking goes directly against the core ethos of the whole GNU/Linux project. No-one cares about market share. The choice inherent is developer choice. If you actually look at some of the stuff RMS has written: the G...

Re: Would Linux be more popular with LESS choice?

As long as linux is free (as in beer) there will never be a way to compare market share with Windows/Apple. They can compare sales figures with one another all day long, but linux adoption is virtually invisible since there are no sales figures A related problem is that people who buy a PC with Win...

Re: Would Linux be more popular with LESS choice?

Just because the "general consensus" thinks I'm wrong, doesn't mean I'm wrong. These kinds of subject provoke a lot of pride, therefore will meet a lot of resistance. It's the classic "All truth goes through three steps: First it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Finally...

Re: Would Linux be more popular with LESS choice?

mintnoob : are you actually reading anyone else's posts on this thread? It seems to me that you're just dismissing any opinion that does not match your own. The general consensus on this thread is: 1) You are wrong about how low is the adoption rate for GNU/Linux in general. 2) If 1 fails, you are ...

Re: World Cup 2010

All I know is that England need to beat Slovenia in order to go through.. If they don't get through, the next time you'll see three lions on Wayne Rooney will be at Knowsley Safari Park. I hear that Capello has called up the Chuckle Brothers for the final group game. At least they're paid to take t...

Hello David. Glad you like Mint!

The Mint community tends to be (one of?) the most helpful and friendly on the web. We don't bite!

And I've noticed a fair few of us Brits around the place.

Re: World Cup 2010

We are running an office sweep on the world cup. As there are 8 of us in total, that divides up nicely to four teams each.

I have drawn South Africa, Cote d'Ivoire, Switzerland and Uruguay. I'm obviously having a lucky day.

Re: Would Linux be more popular with LESS choice?

But since Linux is free, it should have no problem going viral if it is competitive with Win and Mac. If Linux, as a whole, was better, just as good, or not too far behind, respected computer and tech magazines and websites would be giving Linux free advertising by writing positive reviews about it...

Re: DE for old pc

IMO with 512MB you don't really need to worry about a lightweight distro davedarkblade; I have the main Gnome edition of Mint running fine on an eeePC that has 512MB.

Re: Would Linux be more popular with LESS choice?

Let's hear your explanation(s) why Linux is still just a blip on the radar in the desktop market. I know you weren't asking me but IMO the explanations are largely as follows: Advertising budget. MS is advertising Windows 7 on the TV quite heavily at the moment here in the UK. This costs money, and...

Re: 2 distros with 1 /home

maybe have a partition with your data/music and (auto) mount it to one of your home subfolders when you log in? Yes that's what I do. I'm dual-booting Mint and Arch at the moment, sharing a /home partition and I have a separate data partition. I have mark as my username on Mint and orac as my usern...

Re: Linux Mint 9 released!

Isadora is working like a dream on my wife's eeePC (can't remember the spec off the top of my head) Thanks! I'm sticking with Helena on own computer for the moment. I'll probably try to upgrade (rather than reinstall) over the weekend. Yeah, I actually got round to the upgrade last night. Unfortuna...
