Re: Help transcoding FLV files

Why are you actually bothering to transcode? Chances are you'll end up with a file that is either lower quality or larger size. If they'll play, leave the files as you get them.

Re: Gunman goes on ramage in Cumbria

Yeah I had a huge pro-evolution post typed up, but then I thought "why bother?"

No-one on here really cares, do they?

Re: Grub2 – Too Many Options

Should they be using it then? Are you saying Mint Linux needs trouble shooting before you can use it? That's just not the case, Mint is fantastic out the box. No, what I'm saying is that perhaps, just perhaps, someone who flat-out refuses to trouble-shoot Linux shouldn't be using it. Yes, it's perf...

Re: Gunman goes on ramage in Cumbria

Well seeing that that I did not mention any other country but my own and seeing that you have chosen to reinterpreted it as something else I suggest you reread the post. To tell the truth I don't care what other countries do about their gun laws its not my country my business. OK, please accept my ...

Re: Gunman goes on ramage in Cumbria

Another gun debate. OK the US is an armed culture and not all its citizens are responsible in the use of their tools. That being said I don't care because as a member of that culture, my odds of eating a round are very low. If you live in this culture and vote your opinion matters if not, I don't g...

Re: Why piracy isnt theft

Wow, this topic has progressed a long way since I last posted in here! Not much more to add, but this... And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye...

Re: Why piracy isnt theft

It is not a lost sale UNTIL the person STEALS the item. I don't know, if the thief (for the sake of argument, I'll agree to use the word) was never intending to buy the item, and only actually takes it because it's available for free download, have they actually lost a sale? The only real solution ...

Re: Why piracy isnt theft

My take on copyright infringement, downloading, and so forth: There is an argument that goes as follows: If a man has an apple, I take the apple, he no longer has the apple. This is theft, as I have deprived him of his apple. If a man has a digital file, I take a copy of the digital file, he still h...

Re: Linux Mint 9 released!

Isadora is working like a dream on my wife's eeePC (can't remember the spec off the top of my head) Thanks! I'm sticking with Helena on own computer for the moment. I'll probably try to upgrade (rather than reinstall) over the weekend. A big "we are not worthy" to Clem and the team. I'll s...

Well that's certainly saved me from making the same mistake. I think I'll definitely go the apt upgrade && apt dist-upgrade route.

Re: Is Linux Anarchist?

Even though these hateful people are purposely hurting grieving families they do have the right. As a tea party goer I realize that the shoe can easily be on the other foot, we all have the right to peaceably assemble. Canada has hate speech laws in effect, but then you have the problem of a govern...

Re: Linux Mint 9 released!

They had said there would not be a direct upgrade path using terminal or GUI. The best suggestion is to download the backup tool first (located on the software page or through synaptic/terminal). Run that tool as it can backup your /home folder and your installed software. Install Mint 9 and use th...

Re: Is Linux Anarchist?

Aye, fair enough. We can agree to disagree. I've heard of the Westboro lot. It's strange, Fred Phelps was a civil-rights lawyer back in the 60's. I guess he's changed some of his views over the years! But that's the thing about free speech; governments or courts being able to shut up hateful idiots ...

Re: Is Linux Anarchist?

I have nothing against atheists. I will fight and die for your right to not believe. However, you must respect my rights also! Oh yes. I do. I don't want to stop anyone believing anything they like. You could believe in leprechauns and fairies for all I care! If you do not want to pray before the g...

Re: Is Linux Anarchist?

No one tries to force you to worship in this country, and no one is excluded for their religious or non-religious beliefs UNLESS they are using those beliefs to force an issue. Your post is so patently unfair it does not really even deserve a reply. For starters, do you have any proof of what you a...

Re: Linux Mint 9 released!

Similar to the upgrade path posted here for 7 -> 8, will this work for upgrading 8 -> 9 ? Upgrading from the command line (faster): Open a terminal and type the following commands: * gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list (Change all occurrences of “helena” to “isadora”, and all occurences of “karmic” to ...

Re: Is Linux Anarchist?

There's a case I've just been reading about, where an atheist group -- the "Non Religious Society" at Rising Sun High School in Maryland -- have been blackballed from their yearbook for the "crime" of being non-believers. A parent has said "I will not have this type of atroc...
