Re: Internet and privacy

The FireFox plugin TrackMeNot protects users against search data profiling by issuing randomized queries to popular search-engines.

Re: Is Linux Anarchist?

 As a good old-fashioned English Lefty, I actually think there is a great deal of similarity between the structure of GNU/Linux and that of anarcho-syndicalism... not least the incessant splitting of groups and infighting  People are just not responsible enough for a pure Libertarian or s...

Re: Would Linux be more popular with LESS choice?

IMHO you really don't get the idea of Linux at all... What is the idea of Linux then? I said this on page 2 of the thread... No-one really gives a hoot about market share, because Linux isn't about making money. What Linux is about is the free flow of ideas . Regarding your complaint of "too m...

Re: What to do with SPAM

I find it funny when they spam Windows only video conversion software on a Linux forum. They don't care. The object of the exercise (from the spammer's point of view) is to get links to their sites recorded by Google's web-spiders to increase their search rank. The actual topic of the forum they're...

Re: Would Linux be more popular with LESS choice?

Would Linux be more popular with LESS choice? Typical mainstream Windows users with no desire to learn or contribute are a liability to the Linux community, not an asset. They bring nothing of value to the table. How do you know that? I'm not Fred and I'm not claiming to read his mind but... Well, ...

Hung parliament.

Well that was an interesting 24 hours.

Not exactly fair that 36% Tory, 29% Labour, 26% Liberal in votes turns into 47% Tory, 39% Labour, 9% Liberal in terms of seats.

And I still live in one of the safest Labour seats in England

Re: Hit this Linux poll

I'm with FedoraRefugee , all internet polls prove is who can mobilise the most users to go and swamp the poll. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_100#Hacking -- 4chan swamped the poll for the 2009 Time 100 to such a degree that they actually determined the order of the top 21, including the 4chan...

Re: C# vs. others

This discussion is rapidly vanishing from my area of expertise, but just a couple of points: In practice you will often use additional frameworks, which are written in "something" and have Java wrappers. These frameworks usually exist only on one OS and using them makes the whole solution ...

Re: Is it true that programs are frozen in the repositories?

Firstly, just being "able to download whatever I want from the internet, like in Windows" is a shocking security risk. You're leaving yourself wide open to malware. While there is an element of the "gatekeeper" syndrome in the repositories as you correctly point out, we have the ...

Re: C# vs. others

Microsoft may have patent claims over Mono too. It's a tough call; in a perfect world, I would prefer doing without anything that might be patent-encumbered. On the other hand I use mp3 (which is a patented codec) for most of my audio collection. I'm not Richard Stallman; I'm not going to say you're...

Re: C# vs. others

IMO the biggest potential pitfall of C# is that it's not free open-source software sensu stricto and you risk Microsoft suddenly deciding to enforce its software patents.

Re: The world isnt against you.

True, most of the conspiracy theories are silly. Especially in politics most imagine people's values fall on a horizontal line; liberal to conservative or left to right. The truth is this is a circle, not a line. the far far left and the far far right all meet at 12 o'clock. This is where the consp...

I am a passionate defender of free speech, but that means you have the right to say what you want without the government punishing you for it. It doesn't mean you have a right to say whatever you want on a privately-owned web-site.

XBMC works perfectly on my Mint box. You need to enable the XBMC repository before installing:

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xbmc
