Re: Virtualbox WinXP guest with guest additions

One question gets answered by the Help file in VBox

Intel added support for nested paging, which they call "extended page tables" (EPT), with their Core i7 (Nehalem) processors.

I have an early Quad Core CPU which belongs to the Core2 family, so, possibly nested paging is not supported on it.

Re: Virtualbox WinXP guest with guest additions

No luck with VB5.1 either. It behaves just the same. I uninstalled virtualbox via synaptic - removed totally - rebooted - installed VB5.1 - installed 5.1 extensions - started VM - installed 5.1guest additions - rebooted. Launched VM - still the same behaviour. Nested paging and unrestricted executio...

Re: Virtualbox WinXP guest with guest additions

Yes Cinnamon still runs in software rendering mode. You might try to revert to VB 5.1.latest. You need to uninstall VB 5.2 at first, reboot the host, than install 5.1.32. Note, that the guest additions for this version have the same bug as for the latest 5.2 revision. You find a corrected version of...

Re: Virtualbox WinXP guest with guest additions

Hi Cosmo In both VMs, WinXP and LM18.3, the VT and nested paging are enabled in the VM offline settings screen. The runtime Host-n though shows nested paging disabled. Following some Youtube videos, I tried the following steps on LM18.3 in the VM sudo apt remove virtualbox-guest* It reverted with me...

Re: Virtualbox WinXP guest with guest additions

VT is active. Due to text formatting being jumbled by copy-paste, the line before the title belongs to the previous entry. So, actually it should look like this. Sorry to not have informed you of this. Screen Resolution 800x600x32 @0,0 VM Uptime 0d 00:17:20 Clipboard Mode Bidirectional Drag and Drop...

Re: Virtualbox WinXP guest with guest additions

Thanks Cosmo. Even after installing LM18.3 on the virtual HDD and then installing VBox extensions 5.2.7(latest), cinnamon still complains of running in software rendered mode. inxi -Fxz on the virtual machine shows System: Host: jerson-VirtualBox Kernel: 4.10.0-38-generic i686 (32 bit gcc: 5.4.0) De...

Re: Virtualbox WinXP guest with guest additions

I did not install any guest additions on the Linux VM as I am running off the live cd. I am not aware of how to install guest additions for a live cd. Perhaps I have to install to hard disk and then install guest additions, please comment.

Re: Virtualbox WinXP guest with guest additions

No Cosmo, you misunderstood. I have 3d acceleration enabled in settings, but cinnamon complains that it does not see acceleration.

Virtualbox WinXP guest with guest additions

Greetings I have this Gigabyte motherboard G31M that came with a E7500 dual core processor. I have been using Virtualbox(Version 5.2.6 r120293 (Qt5.6.1)) for some time now. However, I found the guest to be quite sluggish. Being a newbie to VMs, I thought it was the norm and never questioned the perf...

Re: How to carry Mint on USB

Hi phd21

Thanks for your quick reply just as I was about to type a follow-up question. Would it be easier to transfer my fully configured installation to an external usb HDD and take that along?

How to carry Mint on USB

Greetings

I will be travelling shortly and would like to take LMint and a VM with me - though on a USB stick. I want to avoid carrying a laptop and hope to be able to boot via the stick on a host pc to execute emergency work (only if needed) in the VM.

Is this doable? What would you recommend?

Re: Quick question on updating a package

Thanks for the replies. Good to understand the under-the-hood workings. I used to update even while having the browser running. After reading your replies, I realize that is not the right thing to do as it may lead to a crash(which has happened sometimes and I couldn't understand why).

thanks

Re: Quick question on updating a package

Flemur I hope you will entertain a little more curiosity. Let us say firefox56 is running when I upgrade to FF57. Obviously, many of the package components will be having files that have names already present on the system. For example the binary 'firefox' itself would get duplicated. So, where does...
