Quick question on updating a package

A quick question to those who know. Suppose I'm running a session of FF and simultaneously via the update manager upgrade to the latest and greatest. I would like to know what exactly is going on under the hood. Till I exit the current FF session, the current version is active and after exiting FF a...

Network time synchronisation

Greetings I have recently seen that my system date/time takes longer to update from the network time. Till such time, my RTC shows possibly the GMT time instead of locale time (error of -5.30 hrs) Is there a way that the RTC runs with the locale time as set in the Date/Time settings till the correct...

Re: Suddenly saw a fsck running at bootup

Thanks for that re-assuring reply. The outcome of the fsck was clean and booted normally. Didn't see it again.

Suddenly saw a fsck running at bootup

What does it mean? Do I have reason to worry? Could it be related to a sudden crash of VBox that suddenly shut the system - like a power outage?

How to upgrade to Virtualbox 5.2

Greetings

I see that the latest release is VB5.2 of 24th Nov. Typically how long before it would appear in my update manager? Is there any other recommended way to update it without breaking my system ?

Re: Firefox 57 - Quantum

Why not use the FTP capability in your file manager instead? You can even add a bookmark so it's always there in the left column for quick access. Easy to use when double pane is set in the file manager for drag and drop purpose. I have crossed over from Win. I have no idea how to do that in Nemo. ...

Re: Firefox 57 - Quantum

My initial response to FF57 was a good review since it is fast. However, like almost everyone else, I miss the fireftp addon which worked in the previous version. The new quantum also randomly crashes with a seemingly funny message. So, now, I have a waterfox installation to bank for cases like fire...

Re: Firefox 57 - Quantum

Just upgraded to Quantum. More responsive and memory leaks seem to have been plugged. Earlier FF 56 used to get sluggish after a long session with flash videos playing. This version seems well behaved. +1 from me.

[SOLVED] Default sound level when booting up

Greetings all

Wondering if there is a way to set the sound volume level to a fixed value on boot up. The current situation is that it remembers the setting of the last session. This is a bit annoying as the volume could have been set at max and then when you boot up, the machine is too loud.

Re: Seagate Backup Plus Slim 1TB external not detected

Thanks for the blazingly fast replies. Mattyboy Eh? did you format the drive? No, my kid just plonked it on a Win7 machine and copied her photo albums on it without any formatting. I decided to add my albums too. However, my LM18 machine makes detection wooshes but does not list the drive anywhere. ...

Re: Update firefox when not pushed by update manager

I observed that the failures / memory leaks are invariably linked to watching lots of embedded videos on facebook during a session.

Update firefox when not pushed by update manager

Hi * My firefox is of late showing memory leaks and nearly hanging the system. I had to xkill it couple of times while the memory consumption peaked at 1.5G. So, I downloaded the latest 55.0.3 ubuntu 64 bit tar.bz2 file, extracted into a folder. How does one install that from there? I can see a .sh ...
