Re: How can I save a file linked on the desktop without destroying the link?

This is the way I do it: Start a terminal and: cd Desktop/ ln -s <networkfile> <localname> Where <networkfile> is the full path to the file on the network, and <localname> is the name I want to have appear on the desktop. This works as expected for me. Cheers. Thanks for the tip catweazel. It works...

[SOLVED] How can I save a file linked on the desktop without destroying the link?

I am sorry if this is a duplicate question -- I did not find anything on this question after a bit of searching. Using ctrl+shift in nemo, I created a link on my desktop (Mint 18 Cinnamon) to a file that is stored on an NTFS volume on a remote server (SAMBA). I can access the file without any proble...

Re: Desktop background shifts to foreground

Cosmo and JospehM -- thank you for the replies. @Cosmo I did a poor job of describing when I booted and saw the problem. That boot was the first one on a day following the day I completed the install. On the install date I booted several times, installing updates for levels 1-3, and I installed seve...

Desktop background shifts to foreground

Yesterday I did a new install of Mint 18.1 with Cinnamon without any problems. Among other things, I set the desktop background to one of the pictures that is listed under Sarah. I added a few desktop shortcuts to programs. Launched a few programs. Everything looked and behaved normally. Today when ...

Re: Will give Linux another few years :-(

Thanks for the suggestions. I did quite a bit of searching so I am aware of some alternatives. I don't like online filing so that pretty much kills any thought of tax return preparation in Linux. As for video editing, I did not pursue alternatives very far. I tried a few and I was disappointed. I do...

Re: Will give Linux another few years :-(

I sympathize with the OP on a few points; especially number 6 -- "When I save a file in the Text editor (xed 1.2.2), I expect to be able to immediately start typing the filename. Instead, it goes into some sort of search mode. I have to double click the default filename and then start typing.&q...

Re: Bootable recovery partion with clonezilla

I recommend either ImageForDOS (IFD) or ImageForLinux (IFL) by Terabyte Unlimited. Their software is not free but it is worth the cost. (They also have an ImageForWindows product that can be used while Windows is running to backup the Windows partition.) All products produce backup files that are co...

Re: What is the software structure for handling IR remotes?

@richyrich,

Thanks for the suggestion to use lirc. By using a combination of the irexec and irxevent daemons, I was able to create a configuration file that provides all of the functions in VLC that I need.

Re: What is the software structure for handling IR remotes?

I have been thinking I might try lirc. Searches on the web found several webistes that suggested avoiding lirc -- saying it is no longer needed since most of its functions are now in the kernel.

I guess I have nothing to loose except a little time learning about it. I will try it and report back.

Re: What is the software structure for handling IR remotes?

I searched for "infra" in the package manager but got a very long list. Items in the list did not seem very relevant. I know the hardware is working. The ir-keytable program has a test function (ir-keytable --test) that displays all scancodes received and the key code that it is translated...

Re: What is the software structure for handling IR remotes?

Thank you for the reply and suggestion. The IR device is like a TV remote with multimedia keys. It has a keypad like a telephone: 1-9 with [*] [0] and [#] on the bottom row. I modified the keytable to convert some of the buttons into letters. The original keytable treats the numeric keypad as number...

What is the software structure for handling IR remotes?

I posted a request for help in the software & applications forum but I don't expect any help will come. Maybe I can solve my problem if I can get a little help here understanding how some things work. Can someone refer me to something I can read to understand how IR processes work or perhaps ans...

This seems like too obvious a suggestion -- have you tried WINE or CrossOver?

VLC does not see input from some buttons on an IR Remote

I am not sure what forum to use for this question. Please let me know if I should post this in another forum. I am running Mint 18.1 with the Cinnamon desktop. I have an IR remote that I want to use with VLC. The IR transmitter and receiver are working OK but VLC doesn't receive the keys needed to p...

I will bump this once and hope someone who can help will see it.

Some information I have found indicates this problem may be caused by a bug. Does anyone have anything they can share on this?

saned.service will not start; service is masked

I have a Mint 18 system on my network that I use as a print and storage server. I have connected a scanner to the system and can successfully scan locally. I attempted to setup sane so I can share the scanner on the network but I cannot get the sane service to start. >sudo service saned start Failed...

[SOLVED] Can't mount shared drive by machine name

Kudos to altair4. I found the solution in this thread ==> https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=157&t=241853 I suspect the key missing piece was libnss-winbind. I installed that component, changed the order of the name resolution in smb.conf, and changed the order of hosts in nsswitch.con...

[SOLVED] Can't mount shared drive by machine name

I have tried all the solutions I could find on this problem and none of them helped. I have three machines on a LAN. The server runs Linux Mint 18 and has a shared drive. There are two clients -- one runs Windows 7 and the other runs Linux Mint 18. The Windows client can see and mount the shared dri...

Re: The noauto option in fstab is ignored

Thanks for the comments. Mounting by UUID is not an option because the drive is one drive in a set of three that I rotate for backups. I mentioned nemo because others have posted comments that certain settings in nemo interfere with "noauto". And nemo does have an effect -- see comments be...

The noauto option in fstab is ignored

I have an entry in fstab that defines a volume that is not supposed to be mounted automatically. But the system tries to mount it anyway and, if it is not present, the boot stalls. I had a similar problem on a system (Mint 18) a few months ago and fixed that using this entry in fstab: LABEL=xBkup /m...
