Re: [SOLVED] Boot fails if USB device status differs from status at installation

I discovered what causes the automatic mounting while trying to solve a similar problem on another system.

There is a setting in Nemo preferences for Media Handling, which can be set to "Automatically mount removable media when inserted and on startup."

Re: Sane won't open Canon all-in-one; device busy

Thanks. All ports are either 1.1 or 2.0 -- the printer/scanner is connected to a 2.0 port.

I moved to another port to see if that made a difference. Nope.

I tried removing the printer from CUPS to see if that might have any effect. It did not make any difference.

Re: Sane won't open Canon all-in-one; device busy

The MP is connected directly to a USB port. No hub.

I don't know what version the ports are. I believe all are USB2. Do you know how I can check this?

Re: Sane won't open Canon all-in-one; device busy

Thank you for the suggestions. I appreciate the help. The group 'lp' is what my scanner belongs to. There is no 'scanner' group on my system. This is consistent with what others have written in their posts. I tried all of the suggestions. I wrote rules in the two files that were mentioned and I also...

Re: Sane won't open Canon all-in-one; device busy

Hi pdc, libusb-0.1-4 is installed I found the group for the scanner, which is 'lp' and added 'saned' to that group. Same result -- device busy. Here are the four reports you mentioned: sane-find-scanner # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the # result is different from wh...

Sane won't open Canon all-in-one; device busy

I am trying to scan with a Canon PIXMA MP990 all-in-one printer/scanner that is connected via USB. The printer works OK under CUPS. Sane can't open the scanner -- says the device is busy. I tried running xsane with superuser credentials and also by logging in as root. Same result. The Ubuntu site sa...

Re: Help Fixing Partition Mess

I suggest you put your swap partition on one of the spinning HDD. The SSD is a great choice for the root partition (not so good for /var and /tmp, however) or anything else that is fairly static. It 's not a great choice for anything that changes frequently like your swap partition because, as compa...

Re: [SOLVED] Boot fails if USB device status differs from status at installation

I did not mention one other thing that may be informative. When I connect the drive after boot, it is mounted automatically and nemo launches automatically to show the drive. My auto mount may be caused by a setting. But I wonder if it may be caused by some process that is running. If so, is it part...

Re: Boot fails if USB device status differs from status at installation

@hallergard -- A great suggestion. I intended to do just that -- write a script to mount the drive if present. It turns out there is already such a process running. I wish I knew what it is. I did some testing, first setting the line in fstab for this drive to "noauto" and confirmed the sy...

Re: Boot fails if USB device status differs from status at installation

@hallergard and austin.texas; thanks for your suggestions. The good news is that your comments lead me to some reading and learning. The bad news is that using UUID did not solve the problem. Using UUID, the system boot does not complete if the USB drive is not connected, just as before. But using U...

Thanks for the replies.

I hope I did what you requested -- I booted with the USB drive attached and powered on, then after the boot I installed the boot-info-script and ran it.

[SOLVED] Boot fails if USB device status differs from status at installation

I am fairly new to Linux so I don't know if I am having unusual problems or if it is common for Linux to have trouble at boot time if some USB devices are turned on/off. I have problems with two USB devices -- a hard drive and a printer/scanner. FYI, the keyboard and mouse are also USB devices. I in...
