Re: Safe to remove Rhythmbox Pidgin and others?

Re: Install Windows in Virtual Box from system recovery disk

You may, however, be able to convert the already installed system to a virtual machine. http://www.howtogeek.com/213145/how-to%C2%A0convert-a-physical-windows-or-linux-pc-to-a-virtual-machine/ I'd second that; by means of the VMware Converter mentioned in the text linked, I've sucessfully virtualiz...

Re: 2 /homes

I'd rather not mix the old system's / user's home (containing i.a. LM 17.3 configuration files) with the new one (containing i.a. LM 18.1 configuration files). Rather, I'd mount the old home partition e.g. as "old_home" (read: user data partition) and copy or move what is needed, when it is needed, ...

Re: Huawei broadband dongle driver suspect.

You may want to "compare & contrast" the wireless connection drivers and settings of laptop versus desktop system, e.g. by means of ifconfig and hwinfo --network (probably requiring the installation of the hwinfo package in advance) or inxi -Nn.

I'd rather not tinker with that one - if you goof it up you're in trouble, and its settings are overridden by those of /home/[user]/.bashrc anyway. Edit the latter if you dare - but do yourself a favour and back it up pri...

From within the extracted archive's folder of deb files, you may want to first simulate the install process:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg --install --simulate *.deb
