Re: I'm imressed with Mint and glad to be here...

Hi,Tony W.I've been using Linux since last summer, and Mint since last week.My hardware is similar to yours, but Windows version and probably older.Working great so far.I am also an SSD user, putting new SSDs in old hardware. As long as you stay away from hardware with known issues, you will probably be ...

Re: About this computer

Thanks.I just saw the inxi -Fxdz in another question.Did it,it works. No need to install anything else. That gives me far more info.Just an observation here- I agree with another comment I saw, about Ask Ubuntu people having snooty attitude.Luckily, most of the advice given here also applies to Ubuntu.S...

Re: Dual monitor woes in mint mate

This has been a persistent problem after installation on both computers. To clarify, the dual screens work fine with the correct resolution, but only with the main monitor on the left side. When I try to reverse the positions to get the main monitor on the right side,it won't change.Would this have anyt...

Re: Pre-loaded Linux Laptops?

I have been looking at websites offering computers with pre-loaded Linux, and am starting to agree with a few others who have answered here.A good used or even a new Windows machine seems to be the best way to go.First of all,I find that the pre-loaded machines don't really have the right hardware fo...

I agree on the SSD s,though I am using them on old hardware.Don't forget, they also run cooler.

Re: I never see anyone talking about building Mint desktops!

I admit I still prefer Ubuntu 16.04 on my desktop, but so far(a few days now),I am mostly happy with Mint Mate 16.04 on my laptop, even though it is not quite as stable as Ubuntu.Maybe after I mess with it for a while I will either break it or figure it all out.(any excuse to do a clean install)

Re: Finally Gave Up Windows! My experience and suggestions...

I must be the luckiest newbie around.I am running two versions of Linux on two pretty old machines, and they both work pretty good.Granted i am not a gamer, but I have'nt had nearly as many problem as you.One small note.Everything ran much more smoothly when I quit looking for something that looks lik...

Re: linux mint alternative?

If you are a former Windows user like me,just remind yourself why you switched in the first place.I am presently using Ubuntu on one machine and Mint on another, and find both to be more stable than windows. There is a learning curve, and you need to do a little research to find out which version of Li...

Re: Power outages! How do you deal with them?

You just have to be lucky.Every time the power goes off,I'm at work,so nothing is running at home. Also, power is very reliable here.I think the last time it happened was when a wind storm spit a 50 foot tree in half in my yard.Half of the tree is still there!!

Re: Bye Windows

I agree with Pierre. Also, this is a good excuse to upgrade to SSD,if you have't already.I am running two 5 to 10 year old machines with SSDs,and can't really find an excuse too buy something newer.

Dual monitor woes in mint mate

I notice that this version of Mint Still has issues with dual monitor setups. At first I thought it was specific to my HP laptop(Elitebook 6930p).However I tried the USB installer on my old Gateway desktop and it was even worse-unusable.Is this maybe because my second monitor is actually a TV?All oth...

Re: Mint Newb

I have tried cinnamon.Mate doesn't seem much different.Maybe a little more program rich, but I presume one can add other software depositories.I use Lubuntu softwre center and find it works better tha the Ubuntu software center, and has mostly the same programs and is much faster.Have not tried to ins...

Re: Mint Newb

Thanks for the welcome.Personally I am windows free-cold turkey-since July 2016.I kept the windows HDD on the shelf for a couple of months, but soon found that I could do what I needed to do in Linux.Oddly enough, I am quite happy in the Unity desktop on Ubuntu, but I already notice that mint is a lit...
