Re: Broadcom wireless won't connect to router (SOLVED)

Thanks again for the suggestions. Tried both and still couldn't get it to work. Then in looking through router wireless settings, noticed that network mode was set to 802.11n only. It occurred to me that this was a newer protocol and maybe not compatible with the ancient hardware, so changed that to...

Re: Broadcom wireless won't connect to router

Thanks will try that stuff when I am back home.

It is definitely an issue with the the specific router. I took the netbook with on a visit to my sister, to test it on a different router. It connected with no issues on her Netgear router which is newer than mine.

Broadcom wireless won't connect to router (SOLVED)

Trying to resurrect an old HP Mini 1000 netbook. I can not get it connect to the wireless router. When password did not work, I turned on guest option with no security, but it still won't connect. I can connect other devices to the router with no problems. I tried all 3 drivers: Both bcmwl-kernel-so...

Re: No sound through HDMI..

I wouldn't know what to look for, but since it worked in Solus, perhaps a comparison of the included packages between that and Mint might provide a clue? https://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=compare-packages&firstlist=solus&secondlist=mint&firstversions=0&secondversions=0&showall=yes#allpackag...

Re: No sound through HDMI..

Have you tried fiddling around on the "output devices" tab of pulse audio?

I do not know what I did, but I think when I had that problem I had to do something with output devices to select or turn on sound via HDMI.

Re: NVIDIA 384.111

In my case, I think 340 came along with the initial installation of mint 18.1 (maybe had to accept proprietary software for this). I think I used it from the beginning, with whatever the initial kernal was, since it shows up as the "recommended" driver. I just wondered about this security issue. The...

Re: NVIDIA 384.111

Mine is an old GeForce 8400 GS, also.

I guess I won't worry about it, unless using xorg version 1:1.0.12-1build2 would be a better option than nvidia 340?

It's on a machine that is only used to stream to a TV.

NVIDIA 384.111

This: https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3496 says: If you are using the NVIDIA proprietary drivers, upgrade them to version 384.111. In Linux Mint 17.x and 18.x, this update is available in the Update Manager. Does this apply only if the system uses 384 or is 384.111 supposed to be used for any Nvidia? ...

Re: First time user, trying to install Mint

Now I just have to wrap my head around this new OS. I have been using only windows for 20 years, so this should be fun. I don't know if your 20 years included Windows 8 and/or 10 (mine did not, my 20 or so years of Windows ended with 7), but in some ways moving from Windows 7 to Windows 8 or 10 is ...

Re: loading mint onto a 10 year old dell inspiron

Note that when you test mint using a DVD it will be slower than it will be when actually installed. Mint 18.x XFCE will, no doubt, be faster than windows 7 once it is actually installed on the HDD.

Re: REISUB stopped working

Bear in mind a laptop may require you to hold a [Fn] key to invoke [SysRq]. ...and that's the key that you can release, the Fn key. I don't know if it is a better choice or not, but I have used Ctl-Alt-F2, this brings up the terminal interface and if that works you can log in then do "sudo shutdown...

Re: Google Chrome or Chromium

Linux is mostly built on free and open source mentality. Moem, if I am correct, sees two flaws in using Chrome. One is the proprietary (closed source) coding itself instead of open source. However what I believe may be more important to her is what is actually in that proprietary portion of that br...

Re: Google Chrome or Chromium

I avoid all things Google, so Chrome is not for me. I think that and things like Netflix are probably the only reasons to prefer one over the other. But since the OP wants to sync with an android phone, there is clearly no desire to avoid google. Using chromium but logging in to a google account in...

Re: Help with finding distro for notebook with 1 GB tram.

I think it's the browser which will be the biggest resource hog whatever distro you end up using. Peppermint 8 worked well, but not for YouTube because Firefox was too big. These comments reminded me that Peppermint has a site specific browser application, I wonder if using that for youtube would i...

Re: Help with finding distro for notebook with 1 GB tram.

I wasn't watching youtube and don't know about the current version, but I ran Peppermint 3 and 4 on an HP mini 1000 netbook with 1.60 GHz Atom N270 Processor and 1 GB ram. It seemed to work fine to me, certainly much better than the Windows XP it came with.

Re: Outdated linux kernel

EDIT: the reason I'm asking is I have lvl 1&2 updates enabled and I usually get a couple updates every few weeks or so. I've enabled viewing lvl 3 updates too and there are hundreds of lvl 3 security updates available, and even a lot of those are not very new (for example VLC 2.1.6 - I've got VLC 3...

Re: obsolete files

Didn't really need to free up space, but since consensus seemed to be they are safe to use, I tried these, just out of curiosity: sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get autoremove dpkg --list |grep "^rc" | cut -d " " -f 3 | xargs sudo dpkg --purge Freed up 4 GB. Then followed these suggestions: https://sit...
