Re: ACER: No Bootable Device

Explanation: I haven't been brought the system in question yet, the person is a very busy person and we've had 2 NorEasters and another is coming here. When I finally get a chance to work on it I promise I intend to update about what I needed to do.

Re: ACER: No Bootable Device

Ok, I clicked on the lock symbol (forgot about being able to do that) and choose to remove protections for that site. It loads that way.

Re: ACER: No Bootable Device

No, not using that right now. Also, I try choosing http without the s and it keeps putting the s back when I hit enter, what is the trick there?

Re: ACER: No Bootable Device

Question to anyone reading this thread, if I gave the site permission with ghostery and ad blocker plus, could firejail or something else be preventing this entire site (and the page in question) from loading fully in my two Linux installs, even inside Windows VMs: https://laptopmedia.com/specs/ Doe...

Re: ACER: No Bootable Device

Ok, page loads on my bare metal Windows system I set up no long ago. So some security measure I have running must be blocking it. I see there is no battery indeed, in fact, accessing everything looks pretty simple, just remove the whole bottom. I did see on another site that there is a pinhole in th...

Re: ACER: No Bootable Device

Now this is weird: Site only shows some text, no graphics and page doesn't load properly or fully, on my laptop or desktop, even in a Windows Virtual Box and even with Edge. My ISP? Very very odd. I'll go try the Windows computer I just set up and see next, just a moment.

Re: ACER: No Bootable Device

FF or Chrome on Both computers in Linux. I think I know that site from years back, they do tutorials on laptops and desktops, with lots of photos, yes?

I wonder if it is firejail, I have no idea. I'll see if it loads in Windows maybe.

Re: ACER: No Bootable Device

Yes, have that link, but the site won't load for me, I tried turning off ghostery and Adblock, so maybe it's the anti mining protection?

Re: ACER: No Bootable Device

It's been so long since I look up repair guides and the fact that the computer is not that old, I didn't even consider looking up. Thank you, I am humbled that you did that.

Re: Cinnamon versus KDE

As far as the visual interface, I'm getting pretty used to it now, my feeling as a noobie so far is that many different DEs have varied benefits, and that you do give up on some things going from one to another, but you just choose what is the closest to what you need. For KDE I don't like the menu ...

Re: ACER: No Bootable Device

Thank you all. As far as the battery, I understand that some laptops DO NOT have CMOS batteries, some cheaper models, and while they don't need much voltage or whater off a powerbank batter, I imagine if that battery goes very very dead, it could be an issue. sand: Thank you for verifying that this ...

Re: ACER: No Bootable Device

Sorry for the other thread, I meant for it to be a different topic but I went off course. So it seems that what might have happened (won't know for sure but when I see it I might have a better idea) was that the father let the battery go dead and it reset the BIOS, which put it back to secure boot a...

Re: Can non root user destroy Linux install in any way?

That is important to know, that I may have to have the thumb drive plugged in again, thank you! I don't like what UEFI has done to computing, or rather, really Secure boot that is, UEFI is another animal and it's a PITA too. ANYONE with warnings, anecdotes, or advice/stories please share. Sometimes ...

Re: Can non root user destroy Linux install in any way?

But you just DID help, help me know some things to look for. It would have taken more some more time to have thought of them, you helped me a lot I think. The battery bank must have been allowed to go dead and CMOS reset defaults. Need to see if it will let me install a non Windows in UEFI, off of U...

Re: ACER: No Bootable Device

Indeed, this is a good point. There might be something I overlooked or didn't understand to control UEFI vs Legacy. I guess I have to reinstall as UEFI in order to let it keep it as default if it wants to reset that way? Or is there another solution? Also, the computer is less than a year old, so I ...

Re: Can non root user destroy Linux install in any way?

That would be bizarre that it happened right after I did this. This is a common fallacy of statistical reasoning. When a drive fails, the user will be doing something or will have just done something. That something doesn't become the cause of failure merely because of the coincidence in timing. BT...
