Re: live usb or full install usb

I have 18.2 Cinnamon Live 16gb USB with 2gb persistence. It is indeed slower than my 18.2 Cinnamon 32gb USB Full install. Both USB's are Sandisk. I don't use either very often any more. A USB will eventually stop working, just not designed for the constant read/writes. I use an old laptop 160gb HDD ...

Re: Tweaking Linux versions? ReadyBoost in Linux?

You have a lot there, so forgive me if I miss something. When DE's and distro's of Linux do not add anything to Linux I don't see why they exist They exist because Linux is not a multi-national conglomerate with a dictatorial board of directors. It is Open Source, anyone can do almost anything they ...

and a little fed up with people that could not be bothered to warn customers that they could not protect their wifi, if that is the case. First off, you are not a "customer" of Linux since you didn't pay for anything. You are a Linux user and a member of a community. The sooner you make that adjust...

Re: Reconnecting wifi after installing Mint 18.2?

Cy O'Hara - You know exactly what is going on because you went through this 2 years ago when you installed Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa. You received the same directions then as now. Your response was: So, I need to download and install Rosa and then find and install the proprietary Broadcom WiFi driver. Ye...

Re: Reconnecting wifi after installing Mint 18.2?

Here is your problem in a nutshell. You have a BCM4311 WiFi PCI card in your laptop. It is a slow POS. It uses copyrighted proprietary drivers. It barely worked with Windows XP and 7. Other WiFi cards built at the same time using the same 802.11 specs were faster and more reliable. The only reason i...

Re: Reconnecting wifi after installing Mint 18.2?

I have a laptop with the BCM4311 in it. It is a slow POS and was a major PITA to get working.
Whenever I need to use that laptop I plug in a TP-LINK tl-wn722n to use instead.

What does this mean? Installing Linux on-top of Linux. How? What does this do? Do you mean a virtual machine? DE stands for Desktop Environment. It is the layer that you see. This will give you a summary of the most common currently in use: https://www.howtogeek.com/163154/linux-users-have-a-choice...

Re: Tweaking Linux versions? ReadyBoost in Linux?

Well, I can offer dozens of examples where there have been no problems using different DE's. Going back 20 years. Once you find a DE that works for you, doing a clean install with that version is certainly a good suggestion. However, when it comes to LXDE, i have found most, if not all of the versio...

I did post the Terminal window results "Hi guys, thanks for all your help. Yes, the results are, "lo no wireless extensions." "eth0 no wireless extensions." Typically there's more, including an entry for the Ethernet card. So that looks like you provided a summary of what you thought was the pertin...

the processor for that PC, 1.66 GHz Intel Turbo N2840, shows as using 64 bit instruction set.
You may want to try the 64 bit version of Linux Mint XFCE

Re: Toshiba Satellite C875D-S7105 Laptop - Serious Troubles with a Fresh Mint Install, Dual Boot with Win 8.1

Is completely reinstalling Windows 8 and then Linux Mint again an option? I am not a fan of "install alongside". Many will say I am wrong, and that it works great. Well, it does, until it doesn't. Most of all I am not 100% certain that the re-partitioning program is completely aware of all Windows f...

If you don't post the complete results of those two commands, then any answers would be pure guess work. They may not even give all the information needed, But it what is needed to begin. You may have a hardware issue. You may have a driver incompatibility issue. All guesses, without information abo...

Re: Tweaking Linux versions? ReadyBoost in Linux?

Yes. different DE's use less resources and therefore run faster. Linux Mint XFCE is an excellent choice. I really don't like Lubuntu. I would rather install Linux Mint then add LXDE and switch to it. Adding DE's to your current system and trying them out is easier then reinstalling. This tutorial wi...

I apologize, something else just came to mind. You should probably save a copy of the file you modified in a directory somewhere else like /home/<yourusername>/documents. Just in case. I can't think of an update, they usually don't update themes, that would change it but you never know. Plus if you ...

Re: can some1 pls help me get scroll buttons to work pls....?

BTW, I noticed that you had the line GtkScrollbar::stepper-size = 18 Twice. That normally won't cause an issue since it just applies the last line it sees to a call. However, if you plan to try GtkScrollbar::stepper-size = 24 You'll need to change both lines or the change won't happen. So, you shoul...

simply increase the various sizes - size, width, length, etc.. until you find what you like. Unfortunately, you may need to reboot to make changes take affect, but try without rebooting, just close and reopen the program, or just just logout and back in. in. Worth a try if you are going to try diffe...
