Re: XFCE over Cinnamon install versus Linux Mint XFCE

To edderland 4: When I did the install, it was set to load along side Mint 18.1. echo $DESKTOP_SESSION returned cinnamon With 18.1 there was a "trick" to get XFCE (or any other DE to run instead of Cinnamon) First click on the user, even if there is only one, while it is waiting for a password. use ...

[SOLVED] XFCE over Cinnamon install versus Linux Mint XFCE

I apologize for the lengthy preamble. I want to explain what I was trying to do and why. I have an old Toshiba Satellite. I use for unattended time intensive tasks that I don't want to tie up my main desktop doing. I use it for things like HandBrake, Torrents, and backing up my router attached netwo...

Re: Mint 18.2 cinnamon netinstall ? [solved]

I've done that, pull the drive, install Linux to it from a machine that had a DVD or USB boot mode and then put it back. Worked fine. One thing to try, assuming the laptop hard drives are SATA, is a SATA to USB cable/enclosure. They run about $10. This way you can install Linux Mint XFCE onto them w...

Re: Multiple issues

First off, get rid of those VirtualBox extensions, they never helped me and screwed up my system too. Removing them with software manger put things back to normal for me. IF that doesn't work, try removing VirtualBox as well. So 2 things to try before having to do a clean install. I also tried to ge...

Re: how to copy a mint installation?

I apologize in advance if I am repeating something already said. I noticed near the beginning that you mention have setting up multiple partitions on the 32gb USB, including a /home. If you indeed have a /home partition, then you are halfway home (pun intended) That is where all your personal settin...

Re: WIFI Problem Fixed Yet?

I agree with the sentiment that whoever told you that there was some general problem with Wifi and Ubuntu is talking nonsense. I have been using Linux on and off for over 20 years. While 20 years ago there were few WiFi adapters that worked with Linux there are now hundreds, maybe thousands, that wo...

Jeremyb31, the man himself, the legend! Thank you!
Yes, it was your original directions that helped me out, and I shamelessly reposted here.
I will give that a try.

Re: It is needed a list of compatible Wifi Adaptors

This is why I love the Linux community. I had tried WiFi Radar from the Software repository, but didn't mention it because it did not work real well and is a real resource hog.Now this, LinSsid, is real cool and works great. Thanks! As for 5GHZ, there may already be ones out there that work fine. As...

Re: It is needed a list of compatible Wifi Adaptors

And I am curious if I use the 5Ghz wifi of the router if I can achieve better results because perhaps all my neighbours are using 2.4Ghz band. But as the above post says: the 5Ghz thing is a problematic issue in linux at the moment. You probably will. I would give the Panda PAU07 a try. Yes I found...

Re: It is needed a list of compatible Wifi Adaptors

Something to try if you live in a densely populated area. There's an app for android devices called WiFi Analyzer(several actually), I believe there's also one for Apple and Windows machines. I haven't found one for Linux yet. It will show you graphically what channels in your area are the most cong...

Re: Distro hopping

Not sure if you call it "distro hopping" because I never actually leave my main - Linux Mint Cinnamon. I constantly like to try new distros, I install them in VirtualBox first. If I really like one I'll install it in one of the 60gb partitions that I keep around for that purpose. Sometimes I just li...

Re: It is needed a list of compatible Wifi Adaptors

Many will think I am crazy, but I have 3 Wifi adapters connected to my Lenovo Thinkcentre M78. I have 3 different Linux Oses and Window 7 Pro installed. Each OS seems to have its favorite. I turn off "Automatically Connect" on all but the best for each system. First, TP-Link tl-wn722n. Since I like ...

Re: Extremely slow (rather forever) shutdown on Linux Mint

It writes to to the dmesg | tail log as it is shutting down. So, there is a possibility that there may be a helpful entry there showing what the last thing it was trying to do. Worth looking at is all I am saying.

Re: Extremely slow (rather forever) shutdown on Linux Mint

Not sure if this will help, but it may give you more info:

you could save a list of all processes before shutting down as per:

ps -A > processes.txt

before you shutdown.

You could take a look at any errors that might have occurred after shutdown as:

dmesg |tail

Re: boot loader jumps to not selected entry

Let's take a look at your grub file.

/etc/default/grub

With luck it's something in there and simple to fix.

Re: View old internal hard drive

Can you see the partition with blkid or gparted? You will need to get the UUID. If you can, this worked for me in a similar situation: Open a terminal to get the UUID: blkid Make a mount point: sudo mkdir /media/<something> Then edit /etc/fstab with elevated privileges (I like xed) gksudo xed /etc/f...

Re: can I change root password

There have been only two reasons that I have had to login as root. To transfer files between two different Linux installations and to reinstall grub after installing a second Linux but I wanted the grub from my "main" installation where I had already made my preferences. Yes, there are probably othe...

Re: I just can't find a good Microsoft office alternative

I do this so often and it is second nature to me that I forgot to mention it in my previous post. Huge advantage of VirtualBox. I have a second monitor. Run Windows in seamless mode on the secondary. Voila! Two computer systems at once!
