Re: Brave Browser ?

Been using Firefox ever since I can remember. You'd think the open source version of Chrome is as secure as people think it is, but I don't think it is. Try visiting a busy sports site, for instance, http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=2 on both browsers. You'll see ads that are some...

Re: Replacement KDE distros... Feedback here!

Linux Mint 18.3 KDE & Xfce are approved for beta release.
https://community.linuxmint.com/iso
I'm probably not going to seriously look for a Mint KDE replacement until 2021.

Re: Kubuntu needs your help

Kubutu would be my replacement for Mint KDE eventually, anyways, so I made my tiny, little subscription.
Nice to see real faces behind a distro. :)

Re: Kubuntu needs your help

You'll gain subscribers by just talking about your plans or roadmap for Kubuntu. Things that will make life easier for people who want to switch to a solid OS. The video doesn't even show anything ground breaking. You might also talk about why you deserve users' trust. People's concerns about securi...

Re: Replacement KDE distros... Feedback here!

I doubt there'll even be a LM 18.3 KDE. The Mint blog says otherwise. They have committed to releasing 18.3. That's nice consolation, but still doesn't change the fact that it will be dropped eventually. I think it will have impact on the number of their userbase. I myself don't use Cinnamon/Mate o...

Re: Replacement KDE distros... Feedback here!

But is it really feasible to use Maui? considering one of its moderators response from the same post here https://forums.mauilinux.org/showthread.php?tid=24650 There are unfortunately other plans. Maui isn't going to release new ISO releases so new users might be better off using Netrunner instead ...

Re: Replacement KDE distros... Feedback here!

At this point in time I would like to suggest waiting for LM18.3 KDE. I am hoping this will be a good start for those of us who wish to stay (at least partially) within the Linux Mint ecosystem, which I have decided to do with my in-house fileserver/mediaserver/workstation. LM KDE still has some ti...

Re: Replacement KDE distros... Feedback here!

Don't really know what so special about Neon. I gave it another try never remembering the issues I encountered the first time. The ISO doesn't have a partition manager. (May not be an issue to others.) It didn't come with Gimp, Libre Office suite, Calculator, etc. Of course, I'm comparing it with Mi...

Re: Replacement KDE distros... Feedback here!

Been okay with using Kubuntu, maybe because I have simple needs. (So this is a "to each his own" thing and personal preferences varies. I'm not one to endorse anything.) Only problem is with Kubuntu I can't connect to the internet when PIA VPN is off. (PIA is one of Mint's main donors.) Which is not...

Re: Replacement KDE distros... Feedback here!

At the end of the day the best way to decide which distro to choose is to actually install and test one in a new partition. You don't even have to remove the existing partitions. That's actually the beauty of it, at least as I do in my system. I'm not a fan of trying it out on virtual machines. It's...

Re: Replacement KDE distros... Feedback here!

I won't be replacing Mint KDE till it's no longer updated, that is mid 2021 as mentioned. But I'll be going with the mother of all KDEs, and that is the most established Kubuntu, which is the Linux distro I started with many years ago because of its resemblance with Windows. I have been adding Kubun...

Re: Replacement KDE distros... Feedback here!

Hmmm.... events have moved on and i have had to make a choice. I don't get the rush. Mint 18.2 will be supported till 2021. Four more years. I'm hoping Feren folks would fork a KDE edition. ;) I often wonder why only Mint team gets it. My Mint KDE is so stable and it doesn't need any maintenance ot...

Re: Is distro hopping ultimately pointless?

It's not pointless if you haven't found what you're looking for. There are more than 100 to choose from, probably more. Seems the moment some basement dweller learns how to assemble a distro, it's added to the already unmanageable list. Nowadays I need to know who is behind it, whether one or two pe...

Re: Replacement KDE distros... Feedback here!

I'm going to stick with Mint KDE for the life of the 18.x series and will continue to use Mint for my Xfce machines and Cinnamon on another machine for familiarity once I've reinstalled this one with Mint 18.2 KDE. I'll probably clone this installation to that machine so I can carry on where I'll h...

Re: Replacement KDE distros... Feedback here!

The driver manager tool in Mint is just a wrapper for the command line tool "ubuntu-drivers" you can do sudo ubuntu-drivers list sudo ubuntu-drivers devices sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall Thanks for that mr. raider. Installing Kubuntu is pretty much the same as installing a Mint distro. Once it's ...

Re: Replacement KDE distros... Feedback here!

I have 3 Mint partitions, Xfce, Cinnamon and KDE. So since Mint team is dropping KDE, I have started transitioning to Kubuntu. That's where heavy KDE development is coming from, anyways. So why not support the source? Kubuntu was one of my main distros way back then. And so I added a Kubuntu partiti...

Probably the majority of us here use Linux for everyday desktop applications.
How would you even know your machine is secure or not? There's no way of knowing.

Re: The direction I dream for Linux

Really depends on what you use your OSes for.
If Windows is still essential to your needs, then why drop it?
I dual boot, but I haven't used Windows for a long while now.
I'll boot in it if I need to. Simple as that.
No need to wrestle with it.

Re: Old 10 inch Tosiba laptop

I barely recall repairing a Toshiba Satellite laptop of a friend only a few months ago. When it was handed to me it was excruciatingly slow. Then I noticed it's getting way too hot. I mean like something was about to explode, and the first thing I did was to remove the battery and let it run via ada...
