Re: AppImage, Snaps, and Flatpak

I love appimages.
I always want the latest versions of my favorite apps.
A painting program like Krita in the repository, for example, is not the latest version.
I prefer not to install it in the system, and the Krita devs release betas and stables in appimages.
Which is perfect for me.

Re: Adventures in Manjaro...

I can only tell you what I don't like about systemD... Rather than doing one thing and doing it well (init system), systemD has expanded to try and do so many (at best loosely related) things that it's become a behemoth. Also, the developers are arrogant and regularly committed broken code and make...

Re: What is the difference between MintOS and Redhat ?

I'll expect to see users making their own MintOS logos for each flavor.

Re: What is the difference between MintOS and Redhat ?

It would be good if it could be renamed MintOSC, MintOSK, MintOSM, MintOSX ( luckily OSX is now renamed macOS ). This way we would not have to spend so much time asking users what desktop environment they were using when they ask a question. MintOSK for KDE Edition MintOSX for Xfce Edition MintOSC ...

Yeah. MintOS sounds better than Linux Mint.
In fact, I started renaming my boot entry to:

MintOS 18.2 KDE Edition
MintOS 18.2 Xfce Edition
Windows 10 Pro

Re: Even Linux is not safe

Of course. We don't get those (almost daily) security updates for nothing.... I wasn't even thinking about Linux Mint. I'll be a life-long Mint user, don't worry. What I'm saying is I have many times been tempted to switch to Debian-based distros because of these posts saying it's more se...

Re: Even Linux is not safe

Ever read this? https://www.lifehacker.com.au/2017/01/which-software-had-the-most-vulnerabilities-in-2016/ And that's just one list. There are lots more similar ones. And that's what I have always suspected. Nothing is ever secure. All the while I've been seeing posts like "I'll never use Ubuntu-ba...

I thought that's exactly what vulnerability is all about; your data is vulnerable for collection.

Re: The Mint 18 series has 'arrived'

I have regularly upgraded since 17x using a not so old machine. And now I'm running 18.2. Maybe because I'm not so critical about minor issues, which is felt on almost practically any OS. And I don't treat every release like XP to Win10 for example. I treat it like XP to XP with SP1,2,3. It's the sa...

Re: You can almost feel it, can't you?

Linux Mint have been good to me. I have had no reason not to make upgrades. I have installed the 18.2 Beta as soon as it was released. Sysinfo says it is already upgraded to 18.2. Meaning the one I'm running is no longer a beta. Which is the result of applying the updates. I don't have an advanced m...

I wasn't aware of them actually reading emails for advertising purposes until I read the above posts and am shocked, although not entirely surprised. A really good reason NOT to use gmail for anything sensitive or personal. Shouldn't be a surprise. It's clearly laid out in their privacy terms. http...

In the past duckduckgo seemed lacking, but been using it again recently and I'm almost always satisfied with the results. I rarely use google search now. If anyone balked at duckduckgo in the past they should give it another try. I concur. It's been giving me all the results I want. People need to ...

Re: Opinion: What is the biggest single hurdle keeping Linux becoming more "mainstream"?

My biggest problem with Android are apps that turn on the wifi to update and then fail to turn it back off, burning up battery power more. My second complaint is updating too often and not being able to turn an app to "not update" until you want to manually do so. Google play is a PIA too. I bought...

Re: Playing with KDE distros....Neon

I've tried a couple of these KDE distros a year or so ago. They're nice and capable, but when it comes to updates I seemed lost. They seemed crude and disorganized. You don't know exactly where you're updating from. Mint distros are straight forward and they allow you to update from local sources. N...

The day you can run desktop OSes and its applications such as LibreOffice, Gimp, Kdenlive, etc. on 7" tablets is the day you'll see tower PCs disappear. What you'll see will be mere flat screen monitors and keyboards on top of everyone's desks. It should be obvious these apps and OSes require proces...

That is old hardware, do not kid yourself. Especially for windows. When windows uses 1 gig of memory and firefox another 3-400 megs, your 2.9 gigs is cut in half by start up and opening FF.That is with a clean install. It goes downhill when you start using additional software like antivirus. It get...

Re: Opinion: What is the biggest single hurdle keeping Linux becoming more "mainstream"?

Not the first time I've seen such question. It's the same "Why do many people still use Windows?" rephrased. And I have nothing to add to the ones already given here. And I think the salient ones has to do with lack of serious alternatives to Windows apps like Photoshop, CorelDraw, Corel Painter, Au...
