That question has an intimidating feel in it, especially when the words, "Enhanced by Google" are very visible on the right side of the search box of the Startpage home page. If those are not traces of Google, I don't know what is. I may be wrong and I stand corrected.

Re: Distro hopping

I was thrilled when I heard years ago that Ubuntu/Mint was going to 5 years LTS support. When I was distro-hopping I noticed those in-between releases would break things. I tried Debian Sid--which is basically rolling release--and unless you always want to be fixing something, which I don't, the no...

Re: Anyone using DuckDuckGo...

Thanks for all the answers.
I've been okay with DuckDuckGo. It's been my homepage.
Not perfect but will probably get better overtime.
Startpage still got traces of Google to me.

Re: ..Epson no longer

If I have to buy another printer, I would pick the one that provides long lasting ink.
It's been years since I bought my Canon Pixma MX330. It's also been years since I bought ink cartridges.
As for Linux drivers, it's detected automatically. Not a surprise being an old printer.

Re: We probably need a new benchmark...

You know, when you have a machine that is neither new nor old, you don't stop wondering whether the DE you picked was the best choice. Neither new nor old is Intel Core 2 CPU 6420 @ 2.13 GHz, Memory: 2.9 GiB RAM. I would guess most machines, millions of them, have similar specs. They can run the lat...

Re: Distro hopping

Well, rolling releases don't even make sense to me. Mint 18.x, for example, will be supported until 2021. That's four long years. I certainly will be able to find at least a day to reinstall a newer release within that period if I want to. No real big deal. I think they're more about developers tryi...

We probably need a new benchmark...

I have tried all of the Mint flavors in my system and they're all working fine. Working fine means all of the apps from the repository run exactly as they should, not to mention the apps that go with the distro, LibreOffice, video players, image browsers, pdf readers, Gimp, etc. But there's a point ...

Re: Distro hopping

There are too many distros and everyday or week there's a new one being introduced. It feels like someone from the basement discovered how to assemble Linux pieces together, give it a distro name, then wants you to try it out. I'm in no way debasing the effort. I just have to wonder what about maint...

Re: Ubuntu drops Unity and moves back to GNOME

My newphew and niece can't draw or paint anything on the screen without using a drawing tablet and stylus pen. It's impossible. Now I see more and more people drawing and painting on top of the sreen itself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A02CBeZvzZU I can't imagine shortcuts are still being used o...

Re: Ubuntu drops Unity and moves back to GNOME

I see that their idea of streamlining a desktop is to make it barren and deserted as if most monitors have the size of a 7" tablet. Man, give me 10 ways to minimize a window and I'm all for it, via RMB, all four corners of the window, via shortcut, icon, you name it. If you have a large monitor, yo...

Don't know how to use the !bangs, whatever they're called, and their difference between normal searches.
Don't know how they can help when your search for some tutorials is exhausted, for example.

Anyone using DuckDuckGo...

...for a search engine?

Seems Google has become a massive miner of personal infos.
Yahoo is probably getting there, but not as callous as Google.

Re: What made you switch to Linux Mint?

Been dabbling with Linux on and off for the last decade.
Most key searches direct you to Linux Mint, which is obviously the most popular and deservingly so.
Which is why I'm here. Can't say I switched because I still have to use Windows occasionally.
