Re: need help installing a Windows application + WINE

As for True Image, I wouldn't trust it as far as I could toss a fully grown bull elephant. It was rubbish in 2010, 2014 and yesterday. YMMV. How right you are...I tried Acronis Rescue Disk (borrowed) to backup my Mint HDD which at the time was 91GB...well this little gem took about 3hrs and created...

Re: Can't get past grub / only black screen

It seems to be the Skylake CPU that's causing all the trouble...on my Desktop computer that's 3.5 yrs old...I have a Haswell CPU which works great and kernel 4.10.0-35 installed. Maybe contacting Intel might be a good idea too.

I have Google Chrome and Opera as well...both run fine. I use to run Firefox and Chrome in Windoze so when I switched to Mint...Chrome came too...then Opera soon after.

Re: Can't get past grub / only black screen

Hi grams, I think it's your Laptop that's the problem...I did some research and found this..."Travelmate X349 and Windows 7" In addition to Windows 10, Acer's laptop also supports Windows 7. The corresponding drivers can be found on Acer's website. Note: Users who want to install Windows 7 will have...

Re: First time user Install 18.2 - Not Fun

I tried to install Mint 18.2 today and I was not impressed at all with the install app. I've been building computers since 1985 and I have avoided Linux. MOBO is MSI LGA 775 G41M-P26, CPU is Q9550 2.8GHZ, 8 GB RAM, 160GB SATA boot drive, 250GB IDE Data drive. DVD burner, SCSI DDS-4 tape drive & flo...

Re: Can't get past grub / only black screen

If this was all I have to do there would be no post on this forum. If you read my initial post, you'll see that A) I have installed Linux successfully on other PCs in this very way and B) it does not work on the laptop I'm using right now. I select my Flash Drive and hit Enter and absolutely nothin...

Re: Interesting Experiences with Mint 18.2 vs Mint 18 installation

I don't burn an ISOs to Disks anymore as I find it easier and quicker to use a Flash Drive and as I said Boots faster to the Mint live Desktop. The only exception is Macrium Rescue Disk for System Imaging...it works much better form a Disk.

Re: Can't get past grub / only black screen

Mint 18.2 is easy to install...both Cinnamon and Mate...I don't know why people have so many problems.. Maybe some are trying to install on old computers with incompatible specs...who knows. This is what I do to install Mint on both my Laptop or Desktop...I use either Rufus (Windoze)...Etcher or USB...

Re: USB connect/disconnect notification

Mint 18.2 has a notification sound when a Flash Drive is plugged in...and when you click Eject and remove it...maybe you should update or go back to Windoze.

Re: Interesting Experiences with Mint 18.2 vs Mint 18 installation

Placing the .ISO onto my computer's (only) hard drive and installing Mint from it was even quicker for me. Significantly so. I forget how I did it, but there's still a working entry in my Grub menu for each of the two .ISOs I installed this way, if that helps. There's a thread here where someone wa...

Re: need help installing a Windows application + WINE

I do need to find suitable backup software. Anyone know if there's an open source equivalent? Why don't you try Macrium Reflect Free...it works great. You need a Windoze computer to download and install the software...then create a Rescue Disk. Macrium doesn't work in Linux but the Rescue Disk does...

Re: Protection Software

When I was running Windoze...I had all sorts of Anti-Virus software...some on the Desktop and several Anti-Virus rescue Disks. Every now and then I'd run them all because Windoze is the worst OS when it comes to security and the fear of getting infected was always there as Microsoft doesn't give a s...

I remember reading somewhere you can't upgrade from 17 to 18...now I know. I've always done a clean install and of cause on my test HDD...just in case I didn't like it...maybe that's why I don't have problems. :)

You don't need a Bootable Encrypted Flash Drive...create a folder either on the Desktop or in the Flash Drive...place files in it and encrypt with 7zip...easy.

Re: Who is using all my disk space?

Thank you all. Downloads was part of the problem, but old stuff that I had been saving (save it! It's valuable!) was the bigger problem. Things like Win95 ISO images, etc. Got 30 GB back without too much trouble. Should keep things running smoothly for a couple of months. I hope you're backing up y...

You never mentioned it was an External HDD...thus my reply. As Flemur said...place your sensitive files in a Folder and encrypt it...problem solved. :)

Re: Linux install to flash drive?

It is achieved by creating a live USB or DVD, the way you are familiar with, then booting from that live USB, plugging in a another USB device and installing to that second device. It's no different to installing to a HDD. Thanks for that explanation catweazel...I'll give it a try...I have a few sp...
