OK to use latest version on legacy h/w? (circa 2004)

I'm preparing to build a new machine, but first I want to test drive Mint on my existing system, which I built in 2008 using components originally introduced in 2004-06 (see sig). Should I install an earlier version of Mint or will the latest version have required drivers?

Re: [SOLVED] Re: Boot up problem [Crucial MX300 SSD]

his would seem to further support the view that despite the vendor claiming full compatibility, there is a firmware/compatibility issue with the Crucial MX300 SSD drives and some motherboards. You mentioned Win10. Sounds like Win10 was installed on the MX300. Did you experience errors/delays boot W...

Re: browsing with Mint + Firefox on old machine (single core Thinkpad)

You seriously need to run Autoruns as soon as possible. I run my systems almost the same way, Antivirus is just too much overhead. We are in the minority. I've been using Autoruns, Process Explorer and Process Monitor for years. My protection is a hosts file and an old version of Comodo firewall. I...

Re: browsing with Mint + Firefox on old machine (single core Thinkpad)

Still, I think it better to use an updated system, than one that's no longer supported. Until you can get that new 'puter anyway. Not sure I follow... updated in what sense? XP hasn't received any security updates in the last 3 years since support ended. Somehow I missed that Neil meant 'operating ...

Re: browsing with Mint + Firefox on old machine (single core Thinkpad)

Thanks for the replies. Exactly what I needed to know. Re: viruses on XP... nope. Quite the opposite. I also still run XP on my desktop and neither of us have a firewall, virus or malware app running as a TSR (I've disabled all non-essential background processes). Protection is via a router firewall...

browsing with Mint + Firefox on old machine (single core Thinkpad)

My wife has an old T42 Thinkpad (765 Pentium M, 2.1 Ghz, 2GB DDR) running WinXP. It still serves her modest needs (browsing only) but she's beginning to experience problems with certain websites and the browser (Firefox) tends to get bogged down on certain sites if she doesn't frequently close / rel...
