Re: sorting out file associations

Yes, it's a symbolic link. When I right click on the desktop icon and click Properties, the "Kind" field says "link to [path]/internetconnectivitymonitor.jar" (see screenshot, below). As you can see, it's currently is associated with Archive Manager, but if I change that to Java Runtime Environment ...

Re: sorting out file associations

Interestingly, if I repair the .zip association and then open the ICM .jar file directly, it works (meaning, .jar is still associated with JRE, not Archive Manager). However, the shortcut to the .jar file is still associated with Archive Manager. Like I said, it's as if xfce is treating the desktop ...

Re: sorting out file associations

Ok. I just saw your edited post and made the change. However, that broke ICM desktop shortcut. Is this an XFCE bug? Desktop shortcuts surely are not zip files?!

Re: sorting out file associations

Ok, so .jar files should currently open correctly, right? Now just add this at the end of the file and you should be good: application/zip=file-roller.desktop; Might be you'll have to restart nemo for the change to take effect. Thanks. Before I make the change, I should point out that I'm running x...

Re: sorting out file associations

Sorry typo my end - the full command is cat ~/.config/mimeapps.list Thanks. I should have realized the cat was missing 8) BTW, I should clarify that to make the .jar file run, I have to open "Properties" for the ICM desktop shortcut context menu, then select JRE in the "Open with" field. Otherwise,...

Re: sorting out file associations

I do not know what the Internet Connectivity Monitor does exactly but I generally have unreliable internet connectivity and for years I have been running "ping" I only load ICM when the internet goes down. I set it to check every couple of minutes so I'll know when it's back up again. It pings a we...

sorting out file associations [SOLVED]

I recently installed Internet Connectivity Monitor (ICM), which is a java script (internetconnectivity.jar). When I tried to launch the program, my OS simply opened the .jar file with Archive Manager. Using the context menu (right-click on .jar file), I associated that file (and presumably all .jar ...

Re: need help installing Cartes du Ciel

Yes, I had already searched the activity list. As noted in my sig, I have a 64-bit Intel machine and all the .deb files are for arm, amd or i386. Hmm... I wonder if it's possible to use the i386 version on my machine? Otherwise, I see there's linux_x86_64.tar.xz version. I should be able to use that...

Thanks. I'm not sure what to do with the .deb file, but I double-clicked on the file and 'Package Installer' opens with the following error:

Code: Select all

Dependency is not satisfiable: libpasastro

need help installing Cartes du Ciel [SOLVED]

As a new Linux user, I'm still learning how to install software. Presently, I'd like to install Cartes du Ciel (Skychart) . I didn't find it in Software Manager or Synaptic, so I downloaded and extracted the tar.xz file. The README file consists of the following lines: New repository is: svn://svn.c...

Re: [SOLVED THE HARD WAY] failed to mount windows share: invalid argument

Since no one replied, I solved this problem the hard way. I restored the sda2 partition from a backup, and reinstalled all the upgrades since that backup. The fact that I have my /home directory path on a separate partition made this a lot less painful than it otherwise would have been. I guess I'll...

Re: failed to mount windows share: invalid argument

Here's the error I get when I click on on Browse Network / Windows Network in the left pane on Thunar (the previously noted error is when I click on a bookmarked shared folder): Failed to open "Windows Network" Failed to retrieve share list from server: No such file or directory. Given this error, i...

Re: bizarre cause & effect: after Firefox loses default browser status, email links redirect to localhost:3240 (Plex ser

Is this [transcoding] even a thing, these days? The last Plex version that runs under XP (0.9.9.14, released in 2013) can only render a handful of video formats natively. I can't recall which ones, but it must rely on the CPU to transcode the most common formats like .mp4 and .avi. If you PM me, I'...

Re: bizarre cause & effect: after Firefox loses default browser status, email links redirect to localhost:3240 (Plex ser

I've been running Plex on my XP machine for years. I don't have that much content on my PC but it's nice to be able to access it from any TV in the house! I'm still running the legacy version on my XP machine. I only load it when I want to watch something. Otherwise, that system goes to standby when...

[SOLVED THE HARD WAY] failed to mount windows share: invalid argument

I have a Linux machine (LM 18.2 xfce) and two XP machines on my local network. Until today I could reliably access shared folders on both XP machines from the Linux machine (although I haven't yet figured out how to access Linux from XP, but that's another conversation). Now I can access my wife's X...

Re: bizarre cause & effect: after Firefox loses default browser status, email links redirect to localhost:3240 (Plex ser

Ok, in the thread linked in the previous comment, I found this: the "Debian Sensible Browser" is just what is considered the default. The program sensible-browser is actually only a script that calls up an installed browser. It's not a browser itself. That explains why Firefox is the default even th...

Re: bizarre cause & effect: after Firefox loses default browser status, email links redirect to localhost:3240 (Plex ser

Thanks for reply. Preferred Applications / Web Browser is set to "Debian Sensible Browser". That's odd, I just checked Firefox again it it reports it is the default browser. How can that be? And what is Debian Sensible Browser anyway?
