Re: Obtaining latest versions for specific packages

If you want to start with LMDE and move up to a Sid install; you just have to let the dist-upgrade chug along. It is big and it will take time. The "Testing" base used by the LMDE iso is already getting quite dated. This will get worse over time; hence the update gets bigger & bigger. However, if yo...

Re: [Solved]Not working theme in some application's GUI

Next I have to set QT themes to looks like GTK+ That part is easy. Install "qt4-qtconfig". Run it and set the theme option to "gtk". All your Qt apps will pick up whatever gtk theme you have set. The gtk2/gtk3 part is more problematic. Gtk3 themeing is currently in a pitiful state IMHO!! Even worse...

Re: Should I downgrade nvidia driver, and how?

Nvidia has released v295.43 which apparently addresses the known performance degradation in v295.40. That may be a better interim step, rather than going all the way to 'beta' version? I am sorry but I am unsure how to change the driver using "the Debian way". I use Sgfxi exclusively (and no 'meta' ...

Re: Nvidia Driver 295.33 or 295.40 install

My experience on ALL Asus laptops that I have installed LMDE to is that "sgfxi" must be run TWICE to work. The first run through simply downloads the nvidia driver, removes the nouveau module and blacklists it. On reboot, it then returns to cli (no X, but no broken system). You simply login again an...

Re: upgrade path to LMDE 201204 + xfce 4.8?

It really is almost impossible to tell what has occurred in an upgrade attempt without at least seeing your "sources.list" file contents. Please post the output from the terminal command "inxi -r" together with the actual commands you have attempted. This is needed to assess YOUR system, because I c...

On servers I set up iptables manually for specific tasks performed - desktops, ufw default deny works for me, testing boxes I don't bother.

Re: Liferea 1.8.3 - so much better than 1.6.5

So totally agree!!! Liferea's database management in 1.6.5 is absolutely diabolical. It is in fact so bad that I use Akregator ( which pulls in a load of KDE dependencies I don't really want on my Gtk installs ) or RSSOwl which is functionally ok but linked to one specific version of java, which aga...

Re: Future KDE editions based on Debian or LMDE?

I would like an up-to-date KDE Debian distro, so I know that automatically requires Testing/Sid, but no such thing really exists. Well, staying just within Debian environment ( ie ignore Arch, Chakra, Fedora, Kororaa, Frugalware & a number of others!!) you can use Aptosid, Siduction or the Debian W...

Re: Can't boot without acpi=off flag

I had one Asus laptop that would not run any version of Mint12 or its Ubuntu derivatives. Same sort of problems with acpi not working properly. I am convinced it was this version of the kernel, as I had thrown all sorts of other distro variations at it with no problem. If you have it booting, just i...

Re: Is AMD Switchable Graphics supported yet?

Switchable Graphics can be configured in Catalyst Control Center. It's supposed to work automatically with latest drivers but it's not yet working for everybody. Is it working for anybody @AlbertP ?? :?: :) I have seen a few claims of this working from AMD bloggers but have not yet met anybody who ...

Re: Multiple desktop environments/WMs

The only two things you MAY need to sort out are themes & menus. You may end up with multiple entries in your menus with the same name, eg "system settings" will appear twice on the Xfce menu if you also run KDE. They are different programs and you will have to edit your menu to distinguish them ( o...

Re: LMDE 201204 and nVidia 295.40 - 32bit OpenGL not working

Don't know about v295.20, but serious 3D performance regressions in v295.40 drivers are a known issue at nVidia; there are plenty of Linux blog references about it ( do a search). The strong consensus seems to be NOT to use them. I don't use "meta" method for drivers so I am unsure how to 'downgrade...

Re: Multiple distros sharing /home

Several Linux distros here, no Windows. I wouldn't even consider a shared /home. A big +1 from me! I run multiple users across multiple distros on almost every machine I have ( excluding servers). I always leave /home included with / and use links to a shared /data partition that has Documents, mus...

Same sentiments as ZZ and GeneC above. Been running my own tweaked KDE version of LMDE a while now, pointed to Testing. Guess I'm not truly within support parameters anymore either. I had the same problem. you can use the following snippet to restore the the color scheam add the following to /etc/bash.bashrc Just a suggestion if I may. Re: Switchable AMD graphics (HD 5650 - HD 4200)

I can't talk to AMD switchable graphics as I don't have any; but, in the Nvidia alternate universe, there is the Bumblebee Project that is slowly coming to grips with this stupid switchable technology and I thought I read somewhere the new Catalyst drivers ( is it 12.3) were now handling this. The a...

Re: Using a USB drive for /home

I know that these drives have limited read\writes In reality, it is unlikely the average user would reach these limits with the newer drives. However, if you want to significantly reduce the number of writes to ANY drive, add the "noatime" ( or at least the "relatime" ) parameter to the drive's ent...
