Re: Is this happening to anyone else???

I had the same experience yesterday; blamed the wifi at first but went back to 4.18 and the problem went away.

Notice that I did not mispell windows
But you did misspell "misspell". That's OK, it is one of the most misspelled words in English.

Well... here's one person's take on what Microsoft's next OS might be.
Sounds like some heavy s**t, man.
As more info becomes available, it sounds like the second coming of Windows 8. Might be fun to watch.

Microsoft"s New "Modern OS"

Notice they're not calling it "Windows"... wonder if it will be based on the Linux kernel

Check out this: https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/eeepc-mx-linux-fan-control-brightness.html and this: https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/eeepc-mx-linux.html Good articles. I ran MX for awhile on the notebook and may go back to it, or Peppermint. I like having Mint on everything but MX does seem...

Re: Is an SSD worth it for an old netbook?

Lastly though please tell me where I can get an SSD for $20? Or was that just hyperbole? If you are in the US, ebay, Newegg, Amazon or plenty of other places... prices have plummeted in the last few months, especially for smaller capacity (<256G) drives. Can't comment on other locations but I suspe...

Re: Tea or Coffee?

Both, of course! I have coffee every morning (good stuff; we don't roast our own beans yet but it may happen soon). I drink a lot of tea during the cooler months of the year, we have about 8 of those here in VT. My daughter in law is from India and her family owns plantations in Darjeeling so we dri...

Re: Is an SSD worth it for an old netbook?

Hi old_noob You can try out a new SSD in your netbook or use it in a newer device or externally - so no value loss (...$20...) The question is: how much RAM has the netbook installed - there are apparently versions with 1 or 2 GB RAM. With 2 GB RAM + new SSD, you should definitely be able to run Mi...

Is an SSD worth it for an old netbook?

I have an Acer Aspire AOD270 netbook with an Atom N2800 CPU (1.86ghz, dual core) and a 5400rpm HDD. Now that a 128GB SSD is available for about $20 US, I've been thinking about getting one for this machine and eking a couple more years of useful life out of it. However, the extremely low power of th...

Re: The pros of XFCE DE?

Not much to add, except that I love XFCE. So fast & efficient. This morning I had a Windows 7 box and a Mint XFCE laptop open on the same desk. At rest (booted up for a few minutes but no apps open) W7 was consuming 1.75GB of RAM and Mint XFCE was at 400MB. Mint opens Firefox roughly twice as fast a...

Re: Unexpected Shutdowns

Could be the power supply as well. We had a box showing similar behavior, progressed to spontaneous reboots, then periodic refusal to boot. A new PS fixed the problem. A cheap easy fix for a desktop box; it could be a pain with a laptop.

also... My other equipment consists of a helmet... if I break some other body part, it can be fixed. The head, not so much. I have only crashed twice in 30+ years of inline skating, one of them when I jumped a low traffic barrier and landed on a seagull that was resting on the other side. I still ha...

Re: Inline Skaters Here?

I was an early adapter, bought my first pair in 1985. At that time I was a Nordic ski racer and used them for leg speed/power training. I still go cruising on them a few times a year, just fooling around (currently using Salomons that are about 10 years old). If you feel you aren't crashing enough, ...

Finally Getting Some Support Around Here...

I am the lone Linux user in our household. My adult stepson (who is not a jobless basement dweller - he helps my wife run her boarding kennel while I commute to something more mundane) is a gamer and refuses to even acknowledge the existence of anything other than Windows. My wife is not a technical...

In my case, I replaced the hard disk with an SSD and installed 2 GB of memory.
I also own an elderly Aspire One and am thinking about getting an SSD for it now that prices are so low. How much difference did it make in your case?

Re: windows 7 EOL opportunity for linux?

I've thought about this often over the last 2 years or so. It is definitely a big opportunity but I'm afraid Chrome OS will be the primary beneficiary. Chrome has been developing into a full fledged desktop OS: big hard drives on new high end Chromebooks, integration of Linux apps, etc. The biggie t...

There are dozens of very cheap Windows 8 tablets (with x86 processors) on ebay. Most will probably run Linux, but how well I don't know.
