When moving coping files from one external hard drive to another external hard drive the file system becomes corrupted, files names become jumbled. To correct this I have to reinstall windows file back in to the effected HD, this situation to risky and a deal breaker to continue using this distribu...

Re: External hard drive files corrupted

Ok I followed the instructions, I think it installed, but don't know what to except next, does it just change the file browser from Cinnamon to xfe file browser, and no more. "Just install it and type 'xfe' in a terminal if it's not in a menu." Your regular file browser will continue to act as it a...

Re: Move Windows to external HD

A DVD will certainly last longer if it's used and stored carefully but you will need to store any data elsewhere. With a USB flash stick it may be possible to add stuff to it; not sure TBH as I haven't run modern Windows in ages & certainly not from USB flash. I did discover some time back that my ...

Re: Move Windows to external HD

Standard w10 pro disk will not boot from USB, needs SATA connection and laptops don't have external SATA ports. The closest you can get to "external" is by replacing your CDROM with a 2nd hard disk caddy. Depends on what you mean by "standard" and by "disk". I have confirmed, through recent problem...

Re: Gparted live USB

This was my first thought also. The only time I used Gparted live (a few weeks ago) I just downloaded the ISO and used Mint's own USB image writer (in the start menu) to make it. Hi Penn-Faust. Yes maybe its Yumi that could be the problem. The on-board gparted is fine for what you used it for, but ...

Re: Gparted live USB

it's strange that Gparted is playing up, as I've never had any issues with it. it's also a good move to have another copy of Gparted in some other Live Environment as well - - Parted Magic or SysRecCd or Hirens Boot Disk - - and on some other Linux Installers too. even though it's now a bit antique...

Re: Gparted live USB

Could always just use the gparted included in the Mint iso (or other gnu/Linux iso.) Have long since found it's good practice to keep such a usb around. Chrooting a gnu/Linux OS I'd somehow borked up via live-session to fix the borkage, has saved me gawds only know how many hours of pain over the y...

Re: Solved Screen Freezes

On average I get a frozen screen about once every 2hrs in a variety of scenarios. The touch pad and mouse become inoperable, the only way out is to power off. My setup is a new duel boot instillation using Mint Cinnamon 18.1 and Windows 10, 4 GB Ram 128 SSD no HD. Any suggestions would be appreciat...

Re: PS/2 mouse not working on 18.2

Hi Giorgoslouk I had a similar issue with my Laptop mouse, mine would just stop working, I had to reboot to get it to work again, what I did was opened systems settings - mouse - touch pad, tweaked the settings a little, try a few different setups. Or maybe its just not see it, if so try another mou...

Re: External hard drive files corrupted

Hi Bob I have a Lenovo laptop which I can't expand, your idea was to free up more space, so I thought well I have WD 2TB HD if I could move win 10 to it and maybe have a desktop short cut on the Linux laptop to win 10 HD. Do you think that would work? Hi Andow, Is the 2TB HDD a 2.5" laptop HDD ? If...

Re: External hard drive files corrupted

Never ever remove an mounted disk without unmounting it. Unmounting flushes outstanding I/O. see man umount. Without umount there is no guarantee that all pending I/O is done already. sudo fsck /dev/ sdXY - replace XY with drive and partition number to checl OR Install gparted (if not already done)...
