Re: No Audio on new laptop

Hi MattTwinkleToes. In the terminal enter xed admin:///etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and when the file opens scroll to the bottom and add this new line: options snd-hda-intel model=asus-zenbook Save and close the file, ignore the warnings from the terminal, then reboot and test the sound. Sound migh...

Re: built-in microphone not recognised Mint 19.2

Yeah, I'm pretty sure pulseaudio isn't starting because there's no sound card to connect to.

Let's see dmesg | grep sof now that the last change was made. I doubt I can figure out anything else, but just want to compare a couple of things.

Re: The speakers wont mute when i plug in my headphones

You probably don't need to update anything, but let's see the output of these terminal commands, inxi -Fxz, aplay -l and pacmd list-cards so we can try to figure this out.

Re: Please help me fix my no audio problem.

Try pulseaudio --start, then see if aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav works.

Re: built-in microphone not recognised Mint 19.2

Okay. This isn't looking terribly hopeful. The command I should have given above is sudo chown root:root /lib/firmware/intel/sof-tplg/sof-hda-generic-idisp-4ch.tplg , but I don't think changing the group will be of any help. This is a complete stab in the dark, but edit /usr/share/alsa/ucm/sof-skl_h...

Re: Not detecting plugged-in microphone

Hi RavenEXP, and welcome to the forum.

Let's see the output from running the following terminal commands: inxi -Fxz, aplay -l and dmesg | grep snd

That should help us decide how to try to fix your issue.

Re: Please help me fix my no audio problem.

Okay, things are looking better. I think we can lick this.

Let's see the output of pacmd list-cards. Also, start a song or video and while it's running get the output of pacmd list-sinks and include that as well.

And just to cover as many possibilities as we can, include dmesg | grep snd too.

Re: built-in microphone not recognised Mint 19.2

I'm wondering if ownership of those files in /lib/firmware/intel/sof-tplg/ might be the issue.

Try sudo chown root /lib/firmware/intel/sof-tplg/sof-hda-generic-idisp-4ch.tplg

Re: How do I tell Mint to remember audio output selection after reboot?

All right. I think there's something going on with the USB detection. This should stop the change from happening: In the terminal enter xed admin:///etc/pulse/default.pa and when the file opens find this section: ### Should be after module-*-restore but before module-*-detect load-module module-swit...

Re: built-in microphone not recognised Mint 19.2

Okay. I'm going to try a guess at a change to the conf file, but first let's check the output of these:
ls -ls /lib/firmware/intel/sof/ and ls -la /lib/firmware/intel/sof-tplg/

Re: built-in microphone not recognised Mint 19.2

Yeah, that didn't work at all. It's looking like this is too advanced at the moment for me to be able to help much more, but I'll look some more, and after you've tried the BIOS update, we'll check some files to look for any little errors. Assuming the BIOS doesn't change things, let's get the outpu...

Re: The speakers wont mute when i plug in my headphones

Hi carlitoselgoyo, and welcome to the forum. Let's see if we can get away with a simple fix. In the terminal run alsamixer . You may need to press F6 to select the appropriate card. Look for a column nemd Auto-Mute Mode, and if it's there, select it then use the up arrow to change it from Disabled, ...

Re: Please help me fix my no audio problem.

Well, I was trying to get you on a still supported kernel. I suck at helping with issues like you had with the kernel upgrade. Somehow, it appears you lost some of the alsa-related stuff in the kernel, which the kernel upgrade would have almost certainly fixed. You can try others if you wish, but th...

Re: Lenovo Laptop

How does one upgrade the kernel? And why didn't it upgrade when the initial upgrade took place after the installation? JC Kernel upgrades to a different series are handled differently. Go to Update Manager > View > Linux kernels, select 5.0 or 5.3 in the left pane, then the highest kernel in the ri...

Re: No audio over HDMI via USB-C hub

Thanks for the screenshots. I admit it's not looking hopeful for the pin retasking, but there's a tiny chance 0x05 might be useful. I'm hoping the lspci might be more helpful. If the differences between the device plugged and not look something like this: 06:00.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation JHL654...

Re: DAC sounds terrible 19.2

Is the system bootable with the 4.15 kernel? If so, test on that so we can at least potentially rid ourselves of one possible reason for the issue.

Also, if this is a dual boot with Windows, boot into Windows then shut down the computer. Wait a few minutes then power up into Mint and test.

Re: No audio over HDMI via USB-C hub

I forgot to mention to remove the edit from alsa-base.conf.

Also, before trying the above, let's try something different. With the device unplugged run lspci in the terminal. Plug the device in then run lspci again. Paste both outputs here.

Re: No audio over HDMI via USB-C hub

Assuming neither of the above leads us anywhere, I think you might need to retask some pins for the dock. Install alsa-tools-gui so you can run hdajackretask . When it open, take note of the codec it's showing in the upper left. Click on Show unconnected pins and for each unconnected pin, one at a t...
