Re: Problems installing on extended partition...

Have never done it, but researched moving partitions at one point. Thing is, there's no tool for the job in Win7. So either you have to do it with GParted (see, e.g., this thread ) or install a third party Windows app (e.g., MiniTool Partition Wizard ). Seems to me clear you have to move both sda3 a...

Re: gnome-keyring-daemon not responding

There is no solution - as long as the developers do not provide any - only a workaround. Open before you log out or shut down a terminal and enter gnome-keyring-daemon -r You need to type the command only once. At the next session you can recall the command in the terminal by the up arrow key. FYI,...

Re: Attempting Reinstall grub2 from Live (CD or USB) ridiculously failing

Gparted screenshot shows that in the disk has logical partitions, so in the disk must be a msdos partition table. Thought that is so, but wasn't certain. By the way, can the OP solve his root problem (apparently sda7 is supposed to be root but has lost its mount point) by editing fstab ? If ...

Re: Attempting Reinstall grub2 from Live (CD or USB) ridiculously failing

No one has suggested to format FAT32, so that was a big mistake. :( Actually, sdibaja did, in this post . Can't figure out why, unless perhaps it's a misunderstanding of the need to clear space at the beginning of a device formatted gpt when doing a BIOS install. Except, in my understanding, reflec...

Re: Load persistant Mint to SSD

There are many reasons not to rely on a persistent drive, especially difficulty updating apps and the impossibility of updating kernels, but if one is going to, there's a much simpler way to do this with mkUSB in Mint. Also, I will reiterate a point I made earlier. No one at this point should be usi...

Re: Troubles installing wine

I've never had to do this myself, but the issue has come up before. Reportedly the solution is something called a "user agent switcher." See, e.g., this explanation by jimallyn in a prior thread. If that explanation plus a little research doesn't answer the question, I'd suggest opening a new thread...

Re: Troubles installing wine

Yes, go ahead and run the suggested autoremove command. As for my question, I asked because it often turns out what folks want to run in Wine doesn't work very well anyway. For example, Wine specifically advises against trying to install Internet Explorer. See Wine FAQ 8.4 . If the issue is you're l...

Re: forum question

Or is there a way to organize my threads so as to put the Solved ones on top, i.e. first page. Further to all41's suggestion, use Advanced Search, include Solved as a search term, yourself as author, and search within topic titles only. That is, you can set all three parameters and, together, they ...

Re: Troubles installing wine

Now that we have something like a consensus, here's what you should do Tradejack . First, delete the malformed sources file. We know you can do this safely because you've shown the contents and there's nothing there you want to keep. sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list Next,...

Re: Troubles installing wine

IMHO, this is a sub-optimal strategy. What the OP should do is purge Wine, including the malformed source list, then start over. First question should be whether he needs Wine and, if so, whether the repo version is adequate for his purpose. Only if the answers to those questions are yes and no, res...

Really? 47 people have seen this and NO ONE has anything to say???? Meanwhile, you started a thread without doing a forum search. You know better. I'll give you a hint. There have been so many threads about this you should limit your search to thread titles (you'll find that under Advanced Search)....

Re: Load persistant Mint to SSD

Can't think of a good explanation for the sdb thing, but pretty sure it's not possible for the live session not to be able to detect the device from which it was booted. Also don't know why Cinnamon had trouble with the wifi connection but Mate not, unless you were still using the old burn of Cinnam...

Re: Can't Paste with Mate

How I do this is by running gksudo caja in Terminal. When opened this way, can move, copy or delete anything.

Be sure to close when done, as can cause a lot of mischief if not paying attention.

For more on gksudo, see this tutorial by xenopeek.

Re: Load persistant Mint to SSD

Actually, the regular method for full install works fine when installing in UEFI to an internal drive. It even works fine installing in UEFI to a USB drive insofar as the system is concerned. Where it falls down in a USB install in UEFI (but doesn't in BIOS) is that it messes up the internal hard dr...

Re: Load persistant Mint to SSD

I understand exactly what you're trying to do and spent a lot of time figuring out how to do it. Apologies if this looks complicated, but I’ve tried to mention everything. In fact, it only takes about half an hour, plus the time to run the installer (another half hour or so, depending on your intern...

Re: Load persistant Mint to SSD

Now Ive come to understand this is called persistent live. As others have said, what you're trying to do isn't called loading a persistent drive. It's called full install to a USB drive. Indeed, given your situation and the fact that you have a nice-sized external SSD available for the task, full i...

Re: Troubles installing wine

FYI, WharfRat, the instructions the OP is trying to follow are here.
The most common error is that the crucial command should read as follows:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-add-repository 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ xenial main'
But folks often overlook the space between ubuntu/ and xenial.

Re: Application recommendations for sync (not backup)?

Following up, yangmusa , don't get hung up on local vs. remote in rsync. If your work network mounts as remote, you can get to the same place (intact files rather than incremental fragments) by including the "--whole" tag in the command string. Also, I read catweazel to be confirming rsync doesn't d...

FYI, a quick forum search shows lostfarmer has posted only once in the last two months, and that was a month ago. So he (or she) doesn't know you've revived the thread.
