Re: Serious installation problem 18.2

Who in their right mind would resize a partition of which they hadn't already backed up the data?

For that matter, backing up your data should be SOP on a daily/weekly basis.

Re: GRUB Installation Failed error

Alas, this is beyond my skill. All the good suggestions I had are covered by that tutorial, which is why I linked it.
Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will be along presently.

Re: Package Manager 'locked'. (SOLVED)

Now that you're out of the quicksand, I'll ask the question I was too polite to ask before. How did you end up with that ppa in the first place? I have VBox on two Mint machines, the repo version on one and the current version on the other. For the latter, updates come from virtualbox.org. Up to you...

Re: 'Update' is 'locked'.

First thing I would do is revise the thread title. Something like: Package manager won't open. You'll get more and better responses. Second, pretty sure your problem isn't packages but rather the repositories list. Manually deleting packages is just gonna make this messier. Third, to confirm. You di...

Re: GRUB Installation Failed error

Take a look at this tutorial: Installing Mint on a Windows 8/8.1/10 Computer. If that answers your question, full speed ahead. Even if not, it should help focus the inquiry. Post back in this thread for more guidance.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest Linux probably isn't a good fit for you.

Re: 'Update' is 'locked'.

I've not had a problem like this, but if I did what I'd do is purge the old version then install 5.2. See, e.g., here , here and here . Note you want to export, move or copy your VMs first. Also, I suspect you'll have to reboot before you start to let Synaptic have complete control of packages. Agai...

Re: password

If it's any consolation, Lamer , you're not the first person to have this problem. I did, and so have many others. In fact, I'm a little surprised to see XFCE still does this in a live session (booting from the ISO before installation), as Cinnamon and MATE no longer do. What you have run into is a ...

Re: Outdated linux kernel

Well, they ARE usually flagged as security updates, even if (as you say) most of the changes in any particular update aren't of that magnitude.

Besides, speaking of context, the issue was whether it's prudent to stay with the 3.13.0-37 kernel. I presume you agree the answer is "no."

FYI, the latest version of VBox is 5.2, so maybe the better answer would be to upgrade.

Re: VeraCrypt Problem

PS - I first saw " Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana ." in a late 1970's OMNI magazine - a sort of science & science fiction magazine. It won some kind of contest for the best funny science word play that was sent in. Most submissions were based around the planet Uranus. Like many...

Re: Virtual box not seeing USB drive

Also, you have to enable the USB controller. Each machine has to be enabled in its own Settings menu, i.e., there's no global setting.

Maybe you've already done both those things, but they're the first items on the checklist, so making sure.

Re: VeraCrypt Problem

That's one hell of a bug! Frankly, makes me glad I stuck with TrueCrypt (my security needs are modest, only worried about casual snoopers). Anyhoo, I notice the last VeraCrypt update was in early July. Hard to imagine it's been more than three months and you're the only one to notice the issue. Make...

Re: Changing from BIOS to a UEFI installation (dualboot)

You don't say how you burned the USB drive, but that could be the problem. Try using Rufus , which most of us have found to be reliable. A USB burned with Rufus will boot in both BIOS and UEFI. Also, perhaps you did this, but to boot in UEFI you have to disable secure boot (that setting generally is...

Re: using Mint 18.2 to fix Win10

This has been general knowledge for over two years now! For this reason, I consider it SOP to disable fast start when setting up a Win10 machine to boot Linux. OTOH, as it's not mentioned in the Mint manual, it may be the OP didn't realize it was an important thing to do. If not, hopefully one of t...

Re: using Mint 18.2 to fix Win10

If you burn a Mint DVD or USB and boot from it, you should be able to browse the Windows disc and pull the required files from it without fixing Windows. Agreed. crimsonninja , if you're not quite understanding this, what you do is boot up Linux. If your external hard drive works, you're golden. Op...

Re: Multi-distro persistent Live USB

Maybe someone else will have a better idea, but if it were me I'd solve the problem of installing to the host computer first.
If you want help on the Forum, would be best to open a separate thread, as the issues are quite different from this one.

Re: Multi-distro persistent Live USB

Well, that may be the source of your problem. I've not tested this (yet) with MultiBootUSB, but I had similar issues trying to install MultiSystem in a live session. Have you considered installing MBU on the host computer? Note it's available for Windows.

Re: Multi-distro persistent Live USB

FWIW, I just tested this (thanks Dave for the tip) and it's working for me.
So, let's talk about your USB drive. Is it full install or merely a live ISO?
Also, what's the operating system of the host computer?

Re: USB Live with Persistent

I used this to create Linux Mint live USB with persistent but when I booted and tested by changing a wallpaper then restarted. Changes were gone. What did I do wrong? I gave around 3GB for persistent What you overlooked (as have others, apparently) is that the last version of Mint supported by that...
