Re: Where to post security issues?

Thanks for posting. With any luck, we'll remember this thread if someone posts in future reporting similar symptoms.

BTW, pretty sure another possible explanation for your symptoms would be a corrupted file and/or partition table.

Re: What is Live 18.2 DVD screensaver password.

Smells like a hardware issue. We've had plenty of folks who needed the tip on how to unlock a live session (absurd this isn't in the manual), but can't recall anyone else reporting it didn't work. Doubt it's the keyboard. Memory, maybe?

Re: How do I collapse open windows into acons in the panel?

Depends what you're trying to achieve. Cinnamon will let you assign apps to Panel (find app in Menu, then right-click to access that option), which has the same always-in-plain-sight advantage as assigning apps to Taskbar in Windows. Open apps are handled separately, though - whether opened from Pan...

Re: Integrating clonezilla into grub

as far as i can tell rsync is for files and folders only and not for whole disks/partitions and mbr. Honest, it'll do the job. I've seen detailed tutorials describing, written by system administrators who really need it to work. That said, if you'd rather do it the other way, Linux is all about cho...

Re: VeraCrypt Problem

The only thing I've changed since the last time I used it when the problem was there and now: I've done the updates including the latest 4.4 series kernel. Correlation is not causation, but I'll take it. :D Had a similar pattern several months ago on one of my USB systems. Kernel update knocked out...

Re: Integrating clonezilla into grub

Have to say, I don't see the point. If you want continuous backups of the whole system, you'd be much better off using rsync. That's one of the things it's designed for. Can't help you set it up, as I settled on a different backup strategy, but there are plenty of tutorials online.

How are you shutting down? Should be using Quit, which you'll find on the Menu (lower left corner of the screen).

Damn frustrating, I'm sure. As I said, at this point I'd reinstall the whole system, but that's your decision. Good luck.

Re: Terminal not opening up.

I can try to install another terminal and see if any error messages show up. Have you looked in Software Manager and Synaptic as kc1di and Hoser Rob suggested in the first and second responses in the thread? The default emulator for Cinnamon is gnome-terminal . It's available in both sources (I hav...

Re: Terminal not opening up.

Isn't the included Terminal an important part of the Linux Distro's code? It is important to make sure it works and updates properly even if I use another Terminal or emulator. What else might be wrong within Linux if this is happening or not solved? What will I deal with in a month when I need Lin...

Re: Terminal not opening up.

If you're not already, be aware there's an alternate terminal emulator available even if the desktop emulator won't work. Access by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1. You'll have to login (user name and password). At that point, you can run the inxi command. Indeed, you can do anything you would in a desktop ter...

Re: Cannot see Mint on BOOT Menu (Can't Disable Secure Boot)

While we're at it, what version of Windows came on the machine originally? I ask because when I look for your model on HP's website, the quick setup guide says it was Win7. Is that right? By the way, as you can boot the ISO, there's an alternate solution (call it Plan B) where you install to an exte...

Re: Cannot see Mint on BOOT Menu (Can't Disable Secure Boot)

I have tried installing Mint a few times but every time I do, it seems to be successful but I can never see it Are you able to get a live session to boot? (In Linux lingo, install is what you do after that, but maybe you're using the word differently.) Which is to say, you downloaded an ISO, then b...

I removed microsoft pipelight with synaptic package manager and the issue seems to be resolved. My fault I'm sure. Don't be too hard on yourself. From what I can tell, lookin' around the interwebs out of curiosity, pipelight apparently was at one point the suggested solution for viewing Netflix in ...

The problem is that the app is no longer supported (see comment 2/3's down page) and last worked with Mint 17.2 [edited to add link]. Don't understand why the developer leaves the site up, except perhaps he hopes to get back to it someday. Anyhoo, a program which does work with Mint 18.x (have used ...

The issue of legacy support interests me, so I decided to take a quick look, in part simply to get a sense of how to figure out stuff like this if a friend runs into a similar problem. I emphasize it was only a quick-and-dirty search, but maybe will give you something to build on. AFAICT, yes, your ...
