Re: Oracle Frees OpenOffice

But "Killing off"? In the case of OpenSolaris Oracle simply shutdown the code repository servers and the servers from where all the software and OS images were distributed. Forums and mailing lists were shutdown too. So unless you are an Oracle employee ... No more access to that stuff. So for all ...

Re: Oracle Frees OpenOffice

Ah? Yet, many also install Sun by default... like a certain you know well, I guess. "Super OS" does, but it's a risky game. Linux Mint does too? (no idea, as I haven't been around much since 2007 ...) Hmm, like this for example: The question here then would be: What does the meta-package do? Point ...

Re: THE MINT CAFE

Or maybe, Openbox? I use FluxBox, OpenBox and WindowMaker on some of my Atom CPU devices, yes. But on my main desktop (quad core, 64-bit, 8 GB RAM) I don't mind having bells and whistles turned on ... :D It will be interesting to see Mint's take on Gnome 3. Hard to believe but GNOME 3 is worse than...

Re: THE MINT CAFE

How have you been, old boy? Very very very busy. Working 14 hours per day and more. Ouch. And now the folks at Ubuntu have decided to push that horrible "Unity" interface down our throats. Yuuuuck. And GNOME 3 is just horrible too. So it's time to go distro-hopping again .... I see you people have ...

Re: Accessing my grandma's computer remotely

All this SSH+VNC stuff is getting a bit old and is not really necessary anymore!

I'd recommend to use TeamViewer:
http://www.teamviewer.com

It's just soooooo easy to setup and use. And it works across platforms (Windows < > Mac < > Linux < > iPhone !!) too.

Re: Oracle Frees OpenOffice

Java Most distros use OpenJDK these days, not Sun JDK ("HotSpot"). Even if ... Sun at least had the wisdom to release it under the GNU General Public License .... which for Oracle means they can't kill it as easily. But Red Hat is already working on a free replacement. And what a bad idea it is to ...

Re: Oracle Frees OpenOffice

Absolutely not! The first stupid thing has been to replace OO.o by LibreOffice with no good reason. Look at what happened to OpenSolaris please? I work with Oracle every damn day ... Guess how Larry Ellison can afford those super-expensive yachts?? By giving software away for free? Nope. That conce...

scorp123 why don't you just shut the hell up and take your ignorant ass outa here if you're so damned offended and frightened over people's beliefs. I don't care about other people's beliefs for as long as they don't tell others what they should believe or not. Live and let live. It's always your c...

Re: Linux Mint 9 released!

I don't like to see swear words in any forum and I wouldn't like my children to see them either. This may be true for hardcore f-word, a-word and m-word expressions ... but come on: The expressions "saltyp" used up there were rather harmless. The puritan comments here are really ridiculous. I think...

Re: Linux Mint 9 released!

I think people can better express themselves without the profanties and vulgar language ... You Americans and your sensitivities ... Know then that other cultures have far less troubles with that. No German, Italian or French TV station will use beep-signals to "beep out" any of the f- or s- ...

Re: Linux is Not Windows

@Nick: So you've been using Mint for 6 years ... but using the "quote" function correctly is still a mystery to you? :D Thats kind of irrelevant. Again mistaken. HP is a huge contributor to various Linux-related projects and even the kernel itself. It's only because of certain "voices of reason" wit...

And the recent direction they've taken with the OS pretty much guarantees it will never happen if they continue down that particular avenue. Yes. Been there, done that. It's very hard to convince customers to stop buying Microsoft crap. Very hard ... but not impossible. There are those who really s...

Who was it that recently said that Linux/Ubuntu is not fighting for our market share? Whoever said this is mistaken. You are mistaken. Linux is not Ubuntu.
