Installing LM20 on second internal SSD

Hi, My Toshiba laptop (bought 2014) now has W10 installed on an SSD.....I've disposed of the optical drive, replaced it with a caddie and installed LM20 on an SSD there. I verified the ISO and the installed LM 20 boots up fine but ONLY if I remove the W10 disk.....With both disks live (in either loc...

Re: WI-FI & Dual boot issues on 19.3.

@ Sleeper12, Hi, Yes, I've seen this article before......Even if it were to solve the issue, with the frequent updates it is too much hassle trying to deselect certain of them combined with the possibility of screwing things up trying to circumnavigate the problem.....I've just resigned myself to us...

Re: WI-FI & Dual boot issues on 19.3.

@ Sleeper12, Thanks for your comment. Yes, I tried that.......The "missing" command updated all that was 'missing' but still the OS won't seek out a WI-FI signal.....Out of curiosity, I changed the disk and installed another which already had Zorin (Lite) installed as its only OS.....The WI-FI signa...

WI-FI & Dual boot issues on 19.3.

Subsequent to the demise of my dedicated Mint 19.1 laptop I decided to install a new 19.3 ISO alongside a Windows 10 Home H.P. laptop.....It installed fine, but then I discovered I could use Linux Mint to access (and open) a great number of files from the Windows 10 partition......Given that I use L...

Re: Cloudfare

Thank you for your detailed comments. After using ‘settings’ to nominate “Cloudfare” (1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1) as the final DNS server on both Windows 10 and Linux Mint (19.1) laptops, I regularly consult “dnsleaktest.com”. The Windows device always reports Cloudfare as the final DNS server, in my case ...

Cloudfare

I have for the past year or so used Cloudfare ( 1.1.1.1 & 1.0.0.1 ) as the secondary DNS on my Windows laptop. Upon doing a leak test the results identified Cloudfare correctly without leaks.....Upon doing the same leak test on my Linux Mint 19.1 laptop (in which Cloudfare is set up the same way), t...

Re: Login jingle

Thanks for your reply, although I had already restored the default file .......My query really was whether or not I was attempting to do something that couldn't be done....or, if it could be changed, how to do it.

Login jingle

Hi, I thought I was being clever by changing the login jingle to my preference......I converted a WAV file into an OGA file (using a Windows device) naming it login.oga, and, using the root level authorisation accessed the Mint systems folder (usr/share/mint-artwork/sounds) containing the default fi...

Re: How do I write Spanish in Linux Mint 19.1?

Hi,
Just read your query regarding writing in Spanish. I hope I have read your query correctly....I have 19.1 installed and my keyboard is European Spanish. To write the accented vowels press the key to the left of "Ç" together with the vowel.

Hope this helps

Re: DNS ID

Thanks gents for your replies.......DNS issue was far simpler than I had imagined. @ gm10.....I looked at the two terminal processes, but the info provided was a little above my head...Presumably events shown in red are an issue so I did a screenshot wondering what (if anything) I can do to resolve ...

DNS ID

I've recently installed Mint 19 on a clean SSD (replacing Mint18) and am really happy with the improvements....I do have a couple of questions to ask. 1) How do I re-define from default to the DNS settings I prefer?....In Windows it is easy but I guess I need to use the terminal in Linux. 2) I like ...

Password for encrypted drive

Good afternoon, I recently re-installed Mint 18.1 (from a CD) onto a new SSD in an old W7 laptop......This time I decided to encrypt the whole drive for no other reason than to see how it performed.....As expected it took a while longer to start up.....However, the problem is, when I am invited to e...

Re: File deletion and/or restore

@ Mute Ant """Every write goes into least-used free space, leaving the old data intact but marked as free-space.""" Yes, I understand that (now)....It therefore means that if the BleachBit option 'wipe free space' (in either basic or root mode) is activated, its interpretation of ''free space' is so...

Re: File deletion and/or restore

@ Mute Ant....Thanks for your reply....But I'm not too sure I follow and more info would be appreciated.....A lengthy ODF spreadsheet document, for example, which is updated frequently (such as bank account tracking) over a long period cannot, logically, retain a copy at each update event even under...

Re: File deletion and/or restore

Interesting replies to my initial question. Thanks. So, having concluded that, with Linux distros, even after using Bleachbit (root) there is no totally secure way to eliminate all traces of unwanted files from either HDD or SSD, the only way is to, before any deletion process, save a copy of the fi...

Re: File deletion and/or restore

Thanks for your reply, and for the link to file restoration that supports Linux. The 3rd party program I mentioned (PrivaZer) doesn't actually delete any targeted file until free space (including that labeled for overwriting) is securely wiped. That process is an option within the software. As you s...

File deletion and/or restore

As an ex Windows (10) user I was accustomed to secure confidential file deletion using PrivaZer software which used to corrupt the file at binary level making it nonsense. And then during their clean-up process it removed any trace in the MFTs and other logs. Equally, Piriform's Recuva software faci...
