Google Earth

Now I don't use Windows on-line, I've tried to install Google Earth (Linux version) on my Mint 18:1 Cinnamon OS.....It downloads OK and the system says all is OK with the installation but, upon trying to activate it all is not OK.....First, the screen is half empty and secondly nothing will respond....

Re: On-Line banking (Solved)

Hi,
Many thanks gents (and possibly ladies) for your replies.....I feel much more confident with on-line banking activity, (not that I use it that much)......Finally I can now use my Mint Laptop 100% of my time online.....No more time wasting Windows updates that serve only to screw things up.

On-Line banking

Hi, I have now, over the past few months gradually completed my move from Windows to Mint for all laptop activity......There is however one major uncertainty.....That is, I have always depended on Kaspersky Safe Money for on-line banking protection......And of course, Kaspersky is only compatible wi...

Re: Deleted files

Hi, Perhaps it's a question of semantics....When the dialogue box says "hides" rather than "overwrites" deleted files it suggests they still exist but remain hidden.....Well we all know that a "hidden" file is not really overwritten but accessible with the right software. Maybe I'm just being picky....

Re: Deleted files

Thanks for your replies, Not wishing to appear negative, I think for my confidential documents I will stick with using Windows, because, knowing how MS stores all kinds of info, after saving such documents onto a secure pen-drive, to clean the laptop drive I have the software that will, by using mul...

Re: Deleted files

Thanks for your comments......It seems I need to continue with my (Windows) custom of saving all my personal files to pendrives and then, on the equipment used to create the file, 'erase the content' and then 'save' the empty file before deleting it......That does raise another question though:- I d...

Deleted files

Now I am now using my Linux laptop more and more in place of my Windows laptop, whereas I know that Windows will not destroy confidential documents or indeed any other file, only delete the file from normal access until it is overwritten....Therefore other software (Privazer) has to be used to chang...

Re: Screen display size

@pjotra........Thank you for all your help and info, alas, to no avail.......I downloaded the Xfce version and burned it onto a disc, then installed it onto a cleaned (by Acronis software) disc in case there were traces of other artifacts.....I followed your guide to the letter and, upon rebooting t...

Re: Screen display size

Hi Pjotra,.....I'm not too sure what 'Xfce' means.....For both the laptop I'm using now and the troubled one, I used the Mint 18.1 given free by "Linux" magazine.....Yes, I followed the instructions to the letter...Point 5a & 5b threw up a "file not known" result.

Re: Screen display size

Thanks for your answers, but unfortunately there was no solution......I had to re-install three times after following exactly the terminal instructions from the link provided by "pjotr" because an imitation of the infamous Windows 'screen of death' appeared.....It effectively rendered the laptop unu...

Re: Protection Software (Solved)

OK, many thanks for that....I use Mint on a separate laptop (old W7), so I'll go with the consensus and leave things be.

As a slowly converting Windows user that has relied upon Kaspersky's protection for years, before I start to use Mint for more personal activities I would like to ask if there are comparable packages available for Linux.....Obviously I have the Firewall activated, and I know that Linux is not normal...

Having converted successfully an old Acer W7 laptop into Mint on a new SSD from an official CD, I've tried the same with my sisters old Asus W7 laptop using the same CD....The screen image is double what it should be.....I've tried to adjust it in the "display" options screen but all it will do is e...

Re: Linux Mint Laptop Options

@ mr_raider.......Upon reading your comment, I am wondering why you suggest not using ACER as a suitable machine for Linux......I recently converted my old ACER 5536 bought in 2009 having W7 as its OS....I installed a new SSD and loaded Mint as its only OS......Knowing Linux is a learning curve for ...

Re: Spanish keyboard layout

As an aside, I have now found out that using Libre Office software on a Spanish keyboard layout that has Windows as its OS also uses the same locations for the "@" symbol.

Spanish keyboard layout (Solved)

Having replaced Windows 7 with Mint on a clean SSD, I find the "at" symbol does not function.......My laptop has a Spanish keyboard which means the location for this symbol is :- Ctrl+Alt+2 During the installation from CD I specified the Spanish version which included the correct keyboard layout.......
